Steeple Sunday:Hayes Barton Baptist Church

This steeple belongs to Hayes Barton Baptist Church.
Note the half moon just to the right of the steeple.
I took this picture one evening at 5:30 pm getting the moon in the picture was a bonus

In the early 1920's Raleigh was growing out of the city. The street car tracks came down Glenwood Avenue and lots were being sold in the area called Hayes Barton. By 1926 there were a number of homes in the area. Meetings were held in the neighborhood for the purpose of organizing a Baptist Church.
The first service was held on Thanksgiving Day November 25, 1926 in a small wooden structure on the property. In 1927 the little wooden structure was torn down and work began on the beautiful cream-colored brick structure. The new sanctuary would seat 850. On September 5, 1962 just ten months after it celebrated it 35th anniversary the sanctuary and original section of the church that was built in 1928 was destroyed by fire.

On August 28, 1966 the first service was held in the new sanctuary.
I love the warm tone of the church's trim color.
Today this church is the centerpiece to a part of Raleigh called Five Points, there are five streets that branch off from where the church sits on Glenwood Avenue. I could not find
the membership number today; however, the church sits on several blocks. Each Christmas
they have a live Nativity Scene that draws spectators from all over the area.
Happy Mother's Day to all Moms of fur and human children.

  1. Beautiful photos!
    How is your mom doing?
I still have to smile when I think of Madi putting the rings in her fountain. I would love to see that!
I listed your blog as "Madi" on my sidebar under Great Pet Blogs. Is that OK, or would you like for me to use your "real" blog title?
Happy Mother's Day! Give Madi a hug from us.

  14. You have wonderful churches in Raleigh!

BTW your favorite red head is having so much fun with the tug of war toy you gave him! After dinner he picks it up and brings it to one of us to play with him! I tried to get a picture of him, but he was wise to the "flashy box" and was trying to smile! What a ham!

  15. Have a wonderful Mothers Day. Blog Mom says it's so nice that they rebuilt that church in a traditional way and that the 50's and 60's saw quite a number of modern abominations in the area of new houses of worship around here.

(I didn't even know anyone could be old enough to remember that far back. I was born in the mid 2000's and I'm considered no spring chicken!)
