MADI MOM HERE!!
Madi has had a tummy issue for about a month and has been to the vet more in the last 3 weeks than all her 13 years. She had been eating and acting fine up until yesterday. She got a prednisone shot on Wednesday to help calm what the Vet thinks might be a mild case of IBD. I am hoping the skittish behavior, and other 100% out of character behavior are possibly related to the shot. We are back to the vet at 10 am today.
Vet UPDATE:
Madi was a tad dehydrated, got sub fluids
An anti nausea shot and an antibiotic shot which is the shot form of the pills from last week
fyi SHE IS NOT AT ALL EASY TO PILL. WE HAVE BEEN
TALKING TO SAMMY AND MOM ABOUT THIS TOO.

When examining her she flinched a little as he felt her intestines. Which is indication of inflammation. He also said the pred can irritate the pancreas...but the treatment for that is the same as IBD. He expects all of this to make a difference today. I am to call tomorrow w update at which time we will decide if she needs to take a nausea pill, which he said is basically tasteless and I can crushed on her food. She is more alert now but sitting in the foyer. SHE ALSO SANG THE SONG OF HER PEOPLE TWICE ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE VET!!
The below photo was taken after Madi ate her first baby meal in over 24 hours.

Feeding should be small amounts several times a day to give her GI tract time to adjust. I am happy to report the Diva has eaten and would probably love to have MORE but we are taking baby steps!!

Oh, Madi, we're sorry you've not been well! We're sending lots of purrs and purrayers to you--and to your mom. If you do have IBD, there's still (we think) a Yahoo group for feline IBD. Lots of good info there, if necessary. Also, slippery elm is a good intestinal soother:
ReplyDeleteSlippery Elm Syrup Recipe
(A good “food herb” tonic to help with vomiting, diarrhea, and other intestinal upsets in cats)
Put 1/2 cup of COLD water and 1 teaspoon of slippery elm powder (you may have to open the capsules if you don't have it as loose powder) into a small saucepan.
Whip it up with a small whisk or fork. Bring it to a simmer over a LOW flame, stirring constantly. Do this for about 1 to 2 minutes, continuing to stir. Cool it off and refrigerate. This will keep for about a week.
The best thing to do is to give to kitty about 1 teaspoon of the syrup about 15-30 minutes or so before meals. Alternatively, you can sprinkle some of the slippery elm powder on the food, but in acute situations (vomiting, nasty diarrhea) giving the syrup BEFORE meals can be much more effective.
Also, would a probiotic like FortiFlora help?
Lots of hugs and paws crossed for you!
Oh no...Madi, I'm so sorry and I can imagine how your momma feels...and I understand that she can't eat when she knows her bestest friends is sick... I hope the meds and the shot will help that you feel better and everything is good at Casa Madi& Mom. I send POTP and 87 hugs to you....

ReplyDeleteOMCness I can feel your mom getting antsy from all the way over here Madi... but you know gal, she may have the right to that after all these years! Fuzzy Tales beat me to it with the S/Elm suggestion; easy does it though - as it can initially be a little unsettling itself. I do hope that IBD is indeed the diagnosis, for it is manageable. Sounds like your vet is onto it though. POTP x87 to the power of 10 my dear furriend! Hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
I hope your tummy troubles settle down soon,xx Speedy
ReplyDeleteYou know many prayers are sent to you my sweet heart. Love too!
ReplyDeleteGet well soon Madi.
The very first thing I was going to suggest is the organic slippery elm. If you aren't aware of Tanya's CRF website (don't worry it's A LOT more than about CRF) you can read all about IBD there and also more on Slippery Elm. Abby was "diagnosed" with IBD in 2011. I didn't believe it and still don't. But I got the slippery elm and made the syrup and she had it in all of her meals the remainder of her life. I also mixed in a little pumpkin because it's good too for digestive issues. She never had any more problems with that. Both the organic slippery elm and pure organic pumpkin (in a can from your grocer's shelf) are not harmful in any way. I hope dear Madi feels better very soon. ((Hugs))
ReplyDeleteWe are all sending tons and tons of purrs and prayers to dear Madi, we love you girl.
ReplyDeleteLittle meals are best right now, we know. Sending all our comforting purrs!
ReplyDeleteOh MDI, we are so sorry that you are sick and not feeling like eating. We hope all that medicine will help you. I bet the Mom was worried about you. We sure send many many purrs and good thoughts to both Madi and the Mom.
ReplyDeleteOh no, sorry to hear you haven't been well darling Madi.
ReplyDeleteWe hope your poorly tummy feels a lot better after the medicine and baby meals. Dip who has had colitis most of her life says she feels your pain.
Hugs to you and your mum, there is no point telling her not to worry cos it comes with the job :)
Dip Elliot and Lynne x
Madi, we didn't know you were under the weather!! Let's see, can we rule out pregnancy? I mean you were twerking and everything just a short while ago. Oh, wait, now that I think about it you might have already gone through menopause. Sorry, I guess that is not really a pawsible diagnoses for not feeling well. Anywho, we hope you are better since you are demanding food and your mom can relax.
ReplyDeleteYour GUY Pals,
Murphy & Stanley

ReplyDeleteMadi and Cecilia you poor girls..we understand all about that nasty tummy stuffs..i was also going to suggest the slippery elm..seems we all have had a little experience..it is pretty scary when you have a usually healthy baby that becomes sick...and yes we have pill horrors with some here too so get the long lasting antibiotic shot which does a great job..we are all here and understand so any time just give us a holler! we send our POTP to you both and hope all is well at Madi's very soon :) loves Fozziemum xxx
ReplyDeleteMoms worry so much about us. They can't help it. We hope the vet is able to help you to become better very quickly! PS: Mom wants you to know that when she has to pill me, Toby, she uses Pill Pockets. I don't like them but she pops them in my mouth anyway. They are a bit oily so they slide down much better than pills alone. We will keep purraying for both of you!
ReplyDeleteOh Madi I KNOW your Mom is a wreck cause I would be too! I am sending prayers for your tummy to get better so that your Mom won't be a wreck and so that you will feel all perky again. I know you will be better soon. I sometimes have to give my tummy a rest too!
ReplyDeleteDear Madi & Mom,
