Today we're featuring our glorious white dogwood flowers that appear to be floating.
and our Harry Garrod Azaleas. Top two are from 2016 and their first blooming season
Bottom right is April 2018. We were so happy to see it bloom we really thought the
horribly cold and fridge January 2018 killed it. Still flowers opening. It will be full soon;
And as of April 10th we have one LONE bright yellow Daffodil standing proudly behind the
Azalea.
This poem was written by none other than the most wonderful author
A.A. Milne. We are posting it in honor of the lone Daffie!!
Mr Milne definitely observed Daffies at their best.
Happy Friday the 13th of April.
Mom is not superstitious but OMCs her Dad aka Papa was.
Here are somethings she remembers that he did
If he spilled salt, he would take the shaker and throw salt over his left shoulder.
At night if a car with one headlight was coming toward him (not sure if I can explain this but I'll do my best)
He would lick his thumb, press it into the palm on the opposite hand and then quickly lift both hands up. Kinda like he was releasing something.
Did you ever wonder......
Where did the superstition of Friday the 13th come from?
First, we loved your poem for Thursday. And the flowers - spectacular and our dad did the thumb in the palm thing too!Happy Firday the 13th!

Great flowers!
ReplyDeleteWe love Mr Milne's poem! Daffies are among our very favorite flowers! You found beautiful blooms today, Madi!
ReplyDeleteHey neighbor, those sure are some beauties!! Have a great weekend, and it is supposed to be a decent one.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom did the salt over the shoulder thing... always. Don't know that I have ever heard of what your Mom's Dad did. The Dogwoods are beautiful. Aren't you proud of that one little daffie? I have never heard of the poem by Milne... it is a treat today! Your grass is so green!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are gorgeous. Azaleas are just so pretty. You all have a terrific day and a good week end too.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of your Papa's way of showing he had seen a one eye car. When we were little we would say fadittle. Last one saying it had to be quiet until another one eye car was seen.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend. It is going to be a very wet and very stormy weekend for us.

ReplyDeleteOMC your montage bouquet is gawjus gal! Friday 13th... I recall being told at school that 13 was considered unlucky due to those who sat at the last supper and one was disloyal - with thirteen, then, there will always be suspicion and this has become superstition. Friday was considered a Holy Day in earlier times, so somewhere along the line the two coicided and the wearing of black to counter any negative influence got added in... me? I have no idea which day of the week I'm on so where's the room for any super or stishus??? hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
Terrific poem and very pretty flowers sweet Madi!
ReplyDeleteWe always told that Fridays and 13 were always considered unlucky -- Adam and Eve were cast out on a Friday, Noah's flood started on a Friday, 13 needed for a Satanic ritual (12-member coven plus the devil), 13 at the Last Supper. So the combination of them was extra bad.
ReplyDeletethe link on my blog list all kinds of 13th stuff... to much to post about. i see a little of it above this comment. i am singing the only little daffodil in the azalea patch because when i saw it i thought the only little petuntia in the onion patch
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your beautiful flowers and that poem. We can only dream about the flowers that will come (eventually) in our yard.
ReplyDeleteWe adore the Daffodil poem and your flowers are so very beautimous, Madi!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hopping with us today!

Your flowers look lovely! We're still waiting for more daffodils to show up in our yard. But today, it's actually not as cold out.
ReplyDeleteThat white dogwood is bee-U-tiful! "Hey Madi, you know how you can tell if it's a dogwood tree?" By it's BARK!!!
ReplyDeleteBwah ha ha,

Beautiful flowers! Our flowering pear trees burst into bloom literally overnight after our 80 degree temps yesterday. We hope the wild storms and wind we are expecting tonight don't blow away all the pretty blooms.
ReplyDeleteWoos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber
Aww, we love your flowers! Thank goodness, they all survived your winter! Have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love the poem. Your flowers are pretty. Our daffodils have almost finished now, but the azaleas aren't even in bud yet. I think the snow frightened them!

Mom is tickled you noticed the buttons. She made the first curtain (of 3) and decided it still needed something and went back and got the cute wooden buttons.
I thought I knew all the superstitions, but I never heard of the car one. I do salt anything used, like when I buy books at a book sale.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Papa thought a one-eyed car was cursed, and he made that sign to ward off any trouble! I like the daffodil poem!
ReplyDeleteMore stunning flowers! My Mom loved dogwood trees and I haven't seen one for ages. Especially one that robust! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe dogwood blooms and the azaleas are fantastic. Azaleas do grow up here but very slowly. Dogwood trees don't grow up here. My brother had a beautiful pink dogwood tree in Vancouver. We always want what we don't have.
ReplyDeleteFriday the 13th has always been a good day for mom so no problem here.
Shoko
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYour flowers look great, especially after the winter we have had. Thanks for the tip
ReplyDeleteYour azaleas are incredible! They've grown so beautifully. I love the lone daffie! "Winter is dead!".
ReplyDeleteYour pops sounds like he was a colorful and funny guy!
Flowers, bet you are happy to see them.
ReplyDeleteMerle..........
Great story about Madi. Since your other cat was a tabby and Madi is a tuxedo cat I can totally tell you why she is more dog-like. I think all Tuxedo cats act more like dogs than any other cats. I’ve had a few Tuxedo cats and they follow you around, demand attention from you, play fetch even and they talk alot. Especially Patzy, my new little Tuxedo/tortoise shell! She never does anything bad, but is very bossy loud and expressive! She knows how to get what she wants whether she taps me lightly or hard(no claws though)
