Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral that is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, replacing Sacred Heart Cathedral.
The cathedral accommodates more than 2,000 worshipers and serves as the site for major liturgical celebrations, pilgrimages, and events for the Catholic community of eastern North Carolina. The existing Sacred Heart Cathedral will be retained and honored as the first church designated to be the Cathedral for the Diocese of Raleigh but will be renamed Sacred Heart Church.
Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral was designed by the architecture firm of O'Brien & Keane, based in Arlington, Virginia, and built by Clancy & Theys Construction Company of Raleigh, North Carolina. It is the fifth-largest cathedral in the United States.[1]

Ground breaking was shortly before I retired in 2011...
The first service was in 2017. Landscaping was recently completed and parking lot needed some touch ups after all the construction vehicles came and went for 6 years time for pictures.
It is huge and we have heard the organ is breathtaking.

It is beautiful and impressive. But the word cathedral brings to mind all those very old, huge cathedrals in Europe. So had to change gear quickly.
ReplyDeleteBe grateful that your magnificent cathedral took a mere a mere 6 years to build. So many of Europe's ancient cathedrals seem to have been built over several centuries...(e.g. the one in Mainz that Bertie featured the other day)

ReplyDeleteas I scrolled through the photographs after reading the history of the church, it occurred to me that I did not know why some are called churches and some cathedrals. you know I had to look it up.... also found Cathedrals are in cities and here is the rest I found.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the difference between a church and a cathedral? ... The cathedral is a much larger place of worship than a church and is run by a bishop. A church is run by a group of clergymen or priests. The bishop usually resides on the cathedral premises.

It's beautiful. Huge scale building project too. And due to my time working in churches I know something.... They guard the use of that organ like a dragon. Incredibly expensive, and complex to operate. Maybe only two people will be allowed to touch it.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful. Seeing it almost makes me want to get back to my Catholic roots. We have a beautiful Catholic church on the Island of Venice that we used to attend on vacation. We need to get back to doing that. Perfect post for today!
