Steeple Sunday: St. Mark's United Methodist Church

St. Mark's United Methodist is located on Six Forks Road in Raleigh on what was rural farmland. Seven acres were purchased for $7,000 for the proposed new church in June 1954. The Board of Missions authorized the purchase of an Armco steel building in December of 1954...this would be the temporary Chapel for the church. Twenty seven people were present at the first service on Palm Sunday, March 25, 1956. Construction for the permanent building you see below began on May 1, 1957.

Over the years, I must have past this church hundreds of times; however, until the day I stopped to take the picture I had never noticed the steeple is on the back end of the church and how small it is. Over the last few months I have featured several Methodist churches, all of which had fairly substantial steeples and all in the front of the church.

The picture below is of the front entrance of the church. This is a lovely welcoming entrance,
all who enter are welcomed by this beautiful front door and protected from the elements by the ample covered area.

Someone at the church has a green thumb and a sense of humor. This lovely patch of flowers run along the side of the church. I got a real chuckle out of this sign, "ant crossing". The plants in the below picture are just a few feet from the ant crossing sign.
Mom and Dad are taking a road trip for the day...she said she might be late checking in with everyone and wishes you all a happy Sunday.
Thanks for stopping by,
Madi and Mom

  17. Hi Madi & Mom,

It does seem a little odd that the steeple is so small and located behind the church, no wonder you have never noticed it before. Could that have been the front of the church at one time?

The Ant Crossing sign is so cute, what a wonderful sense of humor the gardener has. Hope you had a great time on your road trip.
