Pot Luck Friday #11: Old Raleigh Water Tower

The Raleigh Water Works, a private company, built the tower and an attached two story building in 1887. It was used to store and distribute water throughout the city.
The tower was once topped by a 30' iron tank that held as much as 100,000 gallons of water and reportedly made the tower the city's tallest structure.

The tank was dismantled in 1924.

In 1938 the city planned to tear down the 85' octagonal tower. William Deitrick a local architect purchased it from the city. He removed the pine columns that once held up the tower and built four octagonal rooms, one on top of the other in the bottom third of the tower. From the top room, long used for storage, you can look up about 50' to the bottom of the wooden platform where the water tank once sat. He moved his architecture firm into the old granite and brick water tower in downtown Raleigh...where he designed many local buildings including last Friday's Dorton Arena. Mr. Deitrick donated the building to the State Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1963.

This gate leads to a

to a lovely courtyard and garden behind the tower.

The State AIA has outgrown the building. It is now for sale. They are only asking
$685,000 for what is a one-of-a-kind building.
For those interested the phone number is below. (HA!)

Thursday Theme Song

Today, I , Madi am not happy with the song selection!! Mom is going to sing solo...so low you can't hear her!!
Donna, Donna the Prima Donna
by Dion and the Belmonts (early 1960's)

Mom says this song could be my theme song. She decided, without consulting me, to substitute
Madi and Diva for Donna...Mom cracks herself up!!!

Madi, Madi the Prima Diva,
Broke my heart,
We're apart
I met a girl a month ago
I thought that she would love me so
But in time I realized
She had a pair of roving eyes

I remember the nights we dated,
Always acting sophisticated,
Talking about high socieity,
Then she tried to make a fool out of me

We're apart now

She always wears charms, diamonds, pearls galore,
She buys them a the 5 & 10 cent store,
She wants to be just like Zsa Zsa Gabor
Even though she is the girl next door

They call her Madi, Madi, the Prima Diva
Broke my heart
Thinks she's smart
We're apart
We thank Hootin Anni for sponsoring Thursday Theme song...

What is on Madi's Mind & Answers to Monday

Whenever you observe an animal closely, you feel as if a human being sitting inside were making fun of you. by: Elias Canetti, The Human Province
I often feel this way in Madi's presence...she often looks at me as if she is saying have you lost your mind....
Answers to yesterday's question:
1. Madi snoopervising meal preparation. She has decided to be the first feline to have her own cooking show. Every night when I start supper, she comes running from where ever she might be to sit right on the counter. She watches every move I make with great interest. She never tries to come over or get in the way. Madi loves to be where the action is!!
Madi here: Mom moves like lightning when she cooks. I get lots of good neck exercise.

2. The green stick was given to me at Starbucks. They called it a 'spill stick'. It fits into the lid of to go Venti coffee to go to keep the coffee from splashing out when driving. FYI: It works!!!
Ms. Liz from Caribou Crackers was the first to correctly guess this one!!
