COVER AND COLLARDS

OMCs/OMDs you will never believe what happened here at the homestead last Saturday.
Mom and Dad came home with nearly 8 lbs of fresh collards.
I KNEW I NEEDED TO TAKE
COVER
THERE WAS WATER FLYING AND MOM  KEPT TOSSING  COLLARD STALKS AT THE TRASH CAN ON THE FLOOR.

MOM HAD 3 BUNCHES TO WASH AND PREPARE
FOR COOKING.  THIS IS THE FIRST BUNCH

FINALLY THEY WERE WASHED AND READY TO
COOK AT 3:47.  THANK GOODNESS I WAS SMART ENOUGH
TO TAKE COVER.   I WAS SURE THEY WERE ABOUT
TO JUMP OUT OF THE POT
THEN THEY STARTED TO COOK DOWN
BY 3:55 PM THEY WERE READY TO
 SAMPLE
MOM AND DAD WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW TASTY THEY WERE.  REST ASSURED THIS IS ONE THING I WAS NOT ABOUT TO TASTE. I DO NOT EAT VEGGIES
EVEN WHEN THEY ARE TOPPED WITH BACON.
MOM WILL SERVE HALF OF THEM ON THANKSGIVING\
AND THE OTHER HALF ON CHRISTMAS.
MOM HERE: THIS IS A TRUE STORY.  MADI HEARD THE COMMOTION, CAME TO CHECK IT OUT THEN SOUGHT
SHELTER.

  4. Is this another lesson in "language of the South"?! We had to look up what Collards are! We have something very similar but they are called either Greens,Spring greens or Kale. I'd probably eat trhem if they were chopped up....and especially with bacon! Deccy x

  6. We in this household share in Deccy's confusion. For a moment I thought it was some sort of duck - now that would have been exciting.

  11. Yuck. We don't think we'd want to eat them, even with bacon. It's a toss-up for our mom too, if the consistency of collars is like cooked spinach (not sure!). :-)

  12. Madi....you should try it. I never thought I'd like lettuce and now it's my most favorite thing to eat, especially if Mom puts a tomato on top.

  13. Will you be having fried okra too? Must be fried in bacon grease, but I'm sure your mom knows that.

  16. That sure looks like a good hidey spot to keep away from flying collards and all the water splashing about. I know what collards are, but how do you keep the cooked ones to serve later (especially until Christmas)?

I hate picking collards, i hate washing collards, i hate cooking collards, but I LOVE eating them... so keep a plate set for me. daddy grew greens year round in his garden, which ever would grow in that season, collards, mustard, turnip greens. the mustard greens we could also eat on a sandwich like lettuce. fond memories. did Madi tell you they STINK?

  25. We must admit we have never seen any collards around here. But Mom loves spinach and beet greens, so maybe she needs to give those big green leaves a try too - and then she can share the bacon with us.
