Island Cats of Ocracoke: Part III vacation photos

Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest OPERATING lighthouse.
There are others older but they are not in service.
In 1798, a 54' wooden tower was built on this point on Ocracoke Inlet to mark the channel.
After the inlet shifted it was replaced by a light vessel in 1820.  In 1822 that light vessel was also affected by shifting sands.  This same year Congress authorized the funding to build this lighthouse.
It is 75' tall and shines 14 miles out to sea.  it emits a constant fixed beam.
It is not for climbing like most lighthouses.
We were allowed to walk inside.  First opening on the left is a window note the thickness of the walls

The park ranger at  the light house told mom
Mr. Kitty has his own website...as of this writing Mom was
still searching for the websie.  Mom said Mr. Kitty was very friendly,
loved on everybuddy who passed by him.
FYI:  The peeps are traitors they rubbed and loved on him

FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON BLOGGER
DECIDED TO HIDE OUR big Lighthouse post YESTERDAY
IF YOU MISSED OUR LIGHTHOUSE POST CLICK
HERE

So mom tried all kinds of things to get yesterday's post fixed.
It was set to auto post at 12 am Wednesday.  We could see
the Wednesday post but no one else could see it.
Editing the time and reverting to draft then publishing again
I think what finally worked was editing the time to 5pm
she had been changing it to past times.

  3. Gail says she is envious of that kitty. It was her childhood fantasy to live on a lighthouse on an island. (I believe that she once, when asked at school what she wanted to be she she was 'grown up' she answered 'lighthouse keeper')
We are now off to look at yesterday's post.

  13. Mum and I (plus, of course Sixpence and Tigger) were able to read your post yesterday. Mum said that seeing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Okrakoke Island one brought back memories of when my hubrother was a wee pup (early 1969) and they all drove down there for a vacay. She said at the time she was taking oil painting lessons and tried to do a canvas of the Hatteras lighthouse in its original spot!! Mum is the first one to say that the painting was a disaster and she thinks it got thrown out soon after they got home and she quit the lessons!!

  20. SHE's happy you can't walk up the light house....takes 'looking like a chicken' out of the equation...MOL! Glad you could tell Mr Kitty that your pawrents are taken. Guess they were missing you so much, that they can be forgiven for patting a substitute.

  29. OMD, I did miss your big postie yesterday!! Ma will read it next...butts she had to say how FABulous that lighthouse is!!! Ma has always loved lighthouses! We got lots here on the West Coast, and lots within
50mil , so they are pretty cool! Bummer is, most don't allow visitors in them anymore. When Ma was a wee lass, when the dinos still roamed the earth, they were still letting peeps in them, so she still remembers how cool they are inside! (and small! ☺)
LOVES the kitteh!!! I hopes you can find his bloggie...
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥
