Monday Mom Mews by Madi

Since early September mom has been whining suffering with a screaming sciatica...
Well lo and behold she got that under control but she still had a big OUCHIE along her  hip.
She crosses her ankle over her knee to put on her socks.  The right side was so sore she could cross the ankle but could not put press on it her hip to get her sock on.
Well GUESS what friends..... not only did she have sciatica she had iliotibial band aka
T-band syndrome: Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries among runners, mom isn't a runner (unless she is being chased) but she is an avid walker.. It occurs when the iliotibial band, the ligament that runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin, is tight or inflamed. The IT band attaches to the knee and helps stabilize and move the joint.  Mom is pretty sure the nasty cussing sciatica contributed to this event.  All along mom thought the pain was all sciatica when that was better and she still had the pain when she applied pressure to her foot she asked her Doc
Doc, What is Up with this?

He told mom to but a 18" foam roller pictured below.  I sure do wish I had thumbs I'd take photos of mom on the floor rolling around on this thing.  No Dad will not take pictures...he said he knows who butters his bread and makes his toast so he is staying out of this..

Any way each time mom does this exercise her T-band feels less like a vise squeezing her hip.

  1. One more thing to worry about...dang! The problem in this house with rolling around on that foam roller is trying to get up afterwards!

  2. My human has a couple of foam rollers - mostly her boyfriend uses them. But they are not fun exercise tools! They do hurt if you are using them as rehab. You just have to bear with it, I guess.

Makes me glad I'm a kitty!

  3. Oh I hope the roller will help your mom to feel better... the mama bought some wonder-tools too... there was a ball what should help her back, butt it back-fired somehow and a thing for her belly what attached itself to her skin and was only removable with brute force...the best we have for such painful cases is the link to the special moves your mom send once...it still does the trick...

  5. Gail and I are thinking your Dad is most wise not to video your Mom with that roller thing, and we sure home your Mom's hip is feeling better soon (and the nasty sciatica does not return).

  10. How very interesting... I have never heard of this. My knees protest quite a bit when CH and I walk. The pain makes the outside of my left ankle hurt a tiny bit. I am so happy your Doc found a way to help alleviate your pain. I think he sounds like a wonderful Dr. He has managed to figure it all out! Madi, I wish your Dad would take pictures but he is wise to realize who butters his bread and makes his toast!!!! Hahah!!!!

  14. We hope it helps! Ghostwriter gets several new exercises for her knee whenever the PT lady comes over. There are many videos on Youtube that feature two physical therapy guys who deal with all kinds of issues, and seem to be right on from a medical point of view. Here's one of them for starters:
