MyMe and Secret lives of Letters: U

Last week I introduced a new idea for some blog post...
I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your blogs. Often your post put
pictures/memories in "My Mind's Eye" which in turns give me a blog post.
As you know, I'm still working on my own voice here.

Every so often I'll post about things from
My Mind's Eye aka MyMe
Recently on Caturday art the Kitties and Puppies at Alasandra, The Cats and Dogs
had a darling photo of little girl riding a tecnhicolor Fisher and Price tricycle.

My Mind's Eye went back to Christmas 1972 and this photo of our daughter who 16 months old.
As you can see from the photo her her 4 wheeler was a wee bit too large to straddle w/o help.
But she quickly grew into it.

Fast forward to  the  fall of 1973 we moved from our apartment to our first house.
By then she had master the art of 4 wheeling; however, the area to ride around the apartment was
limited.  Our new home was on the corner. In front of the house was blocks and blocks of level sidewalk.  By the time she was about 3  she rode with mach speed with the streamers blowing wind. We had another sidewalk beside our house.  It started out level then went down hill fast.
After many many months of begging to ride there, (yes she was a dare devil) she and her Daddy came to an agreement.  He would carry the 4 wheeler down the sidewalk, about 1/2 a block to where it was level, then she could ride the rest of the way.  She insisted on trying to ride up the hill. She quickly realized  it was literally an up hill battle.  Her Daddy offered to carry the 4 wheeler while she walked.
All of a sudden he was carrying her and the 4 wheeler.
She said Daddy, "this is a heavy hill and a steep Marlu"!!

November Reader's Digest and I happened upon this article,
"The Secret Lives of Letters", by Brooke Nelson.  Mr. Nelson says letters may be small characters, but there are amazing stories behind all 26 alphabet all-stars.

  1. You can see the daredevil attitude in Marlu's expression. Great picture!

  7. A four wheeler! Pretty cool and of course she wanted to go fast! Sweet story and conversation with her Dad! Have to laugh over the bargaining that went on between them. So that is how we got U as a vowel.

  8. what a precious photo and memory.. she was indeed a dare devil. I am sure she thought of daddy as her Hero of the moment... I never really thought about who chose the consonants and vowels and now I know it was done by humans

  11. What a fun story of Marlu and her four wheeler. We bet you all got a lot of exercise keeping up with her on her trips around the neighborhood.

  12. What a fun and entertaining story about your little one. I had to laugh about dad carrying her and the trike back up the hill. That's how it goes.

    I didn't know about the letters u and v. I do now.

I linked this post to Happy Tuesday. It's a happy post.

Have a fabulous day, my friend. Big hug. ♥

  13. We lived at the top of a 'hill', and I remember my first bike ride, when I went down the hill but didn't know how to use the breaks (pedal backward!) That moment of supreme fear left a scar in my psyche; many decades later, and bike riding still makes me nervous!

  14. Mom said our human brother had one of those three wheeled "big wheels" when he was around 4 or 5. He and four other boys from the neighborhood, all the same age, would ride up and down the street that bordered Mom and Dad's yard with those wheels going clickety clack on and on and over and over. Mom's dog, a sheltie, would race the fence line and bark NONSTOP at those wheels:)

    Fun to see those memories.

  15. Ghostwriter was reminded about when the four siblings were little. She would go for a walk with them with the two older ones riding their bikes, and the younger ones in a double stroller. The bikers got to ride ahead to certain points and then either wait for mom to catch up, or else ride back. Then came the doggies … walking up to three cockers was a quite another challenge!

  16. What a daredevil(and Daddy's girl) Marlu was!

I always wondered when they added the V to the alphabet!!

  17. That is a sweet and lovely memory. It brought back memories of when I got a bike. My dad died when I was very young so money was short. My mum knew all my friends had two wheelers and I longed for one of my own. She saw a showroom model which was hugely reduced because it had green tyres which no-one wanted. I loved my bike, green tyres and all. It had the name Silver Princess sign written on it and I did feel like a princess riding it.

  21. I love that your Christmas tree is in the playpen! LOL! It is easy to forget how busy toddlers are but I am remembering every day that I babysit my grandbabies. The five month old learned to crawl and she is a speed demon already! I was wishing for a good old fashioned playpen yesterday.
