Today I'm stepping up on my PSA soap box with a
very impawtant message
HAIR DRYER SAFETY
We have been going to the same lady for, our monthly, hair cuts for 20+ years. I don't color my hair or have it washed and dried just a
wet hair cut. After she finishes with me, I use her
dryer for a few minutes.
Last week I noticed she had a new RED👏 hair dryer.
I said, "I like your new dryer, did the other one give out"?
She said, "yes, actually it made a big Poof, then some smoke and then a fire came out of the front."

I exclaimed WHAT, was any one in the chair?
Oh the horror of this happening with a person in her chair.
BUT Thankfully NO one was in the chair.

After she cuts hair, she uses her dryer to blow any hair off the chair before the next customer.
About once a week she takes the back off her dryer

itty bitty hairs. The 'care' instructions for the dryer say one should
vacuum out the both the dryer and the little filter regularly for safety.

Now this being said her dryer gets used 87 more times than
a home hair dryer. That very day, I checked my hair dryer.
The small black filter had at least 1/2 covered with dust.
I vacuumed my dryer immediately. From that day forward I
will be checking it OFTEN.

I need to fess up...I should have mentioned on yesterday's
Sparks photo (below) the roses are not ours.
They are way toooooo needy and high maintenance for us.

Wow!! I would never think to look at the filter of my blow dryer...now I will!!

that happened to the mama too... she saw flames and there was a BIG BANG and then she lost her bangs... and since that day she always looks in the butt of the hair dryer if there is a hair or dust jam...

I hardly ever use hair dryers - I'm usually lazy. But it makes sense - kind of like how the majority of home fires are due to lint in the dryer or vent. When I used the hair dryer, I used to be big on cleaning the filter once a week. But apparently I never learn because I had computer problems and we opened up my tower and there was a vacuum cleaner worth of dust in there!

ReplyDeletehave never heard of cleaning a dryer, or one catching fire either. Glad you shared this. I don't use one now, stopped about 2 years ago.. I finger dry my hair, I also quit with the curling iron. I just fluff it and let it hang

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness your hairdryer PSA today has reawakened memories of a major childhood trauma. Our family hairdryer once burst into flames when my I was about six years old and my mother was drying my hair. I was not burned, and neither was my mother, but I was very frightened by the episode. What compounded the trauma was that rather than throwing away the hairdryer and buying a new one, my thrifty father mended the electrics and we continued to use the dryer. Every time it was taken out and I saw the area on the side of the dryer than had melted a bit in the fire, I was newly terrified!

Holy Miley I had no idea about the dryer. Thanks so much for the safety reminder. The packaging the comes with a new dryer will tell you to be sure to keep it clean. What a timely thing to tell us. XX
ReplyDeletepee ess I got tickled at the roses "confession". They are too high maintenance and needy forME too. I have one Knockout Rose...that's it.
My human has never heard of vacuuming the hair dryer! She does clean out the back regularly, but maybe that's not enough!
ReplyDeleteI don't let my hairstylist blow dry my hair anymore; I tell her that I'm never going to do it, so any style she gives me must be no-fuss! Which is why my hair is now really short...but I love her and she'd better keep working until forever...!

It is amazing how much gunk the hair dryer collects. I use an old one to blow dry the boys after their baths and Bentley's hair gets in it BOL! I love roses and am tempted every year to plant some but I agree that they are way too needy for me to tend.

ReplyDeleteOh, Ma's hairdryer gets as much use as a salon one, so she always cleans hers out with a soft toothbrush. She's never had one spew fire befores! yikes!
