Steeple Sunday: Centenary United Methodist Church

New Bern, NC

Architectural styleNeoclassical architecture
Centenary Methodist Church is a historic Methodist church located at New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. It was built in 1904-1905, and is an irregularly shaped, brick multiple-use church complex. The front facade includes an entrance five-bay arcade beneath a low conical ... Architect, Simpson, Herbert Woodley; Stephens & Cardelli.

This  church had so many different roof lines
I've never seen a church with this type of architecture

Huge stain glass windows that I would have loved to see from inside
stain glass windows were all around it.

It looks like a castle from every angle

Gracious! As a lover of architecture, I find this one a tad grotesque. Doesn't seem to quite know where it belongs... and for a Methodist building, it seems far too ornate - more Catholic in design. Was it not open for you to visit inside? Such a shame not to give those windows a chance at full glory! YAM xx

  2. The church architecture is indeed unique. And very different from the typical Methodist chapels we see in the UK, which are notably plain. (My maternal grandfather was a Methodist, although strangely that did not deter him from sending my mother to an Anglo-Catholic convent boarding school).
    Cheers, Gail.

  3. I would never have guessed this is a church. also that is the oddest name ever for a church. I looked up the word and it means 100 years old. still odd name. it is a magnificent building. I wonder if all the different roof lines are because they kept adding to the orginal...the two pics of the windows at the front doors are AWESOME! great job on the photos

  4. It does have a different look for a church but it's very pretty. I would love to see the stained glass windows from inside too!

  6. That building is very unusual for a church, particularly for a Methodist church. In the UK Methodist churches are much more basic. I agree that it looks much more like a castle than a place of worship.

  8. A very unique church indeed. I agree with some of the other comments that this is very unusual for a Methodist church (having been raised in a very plain white one).

  9. If you hadn't said it was a church, I wouldn't ever have guessed that! It is quite pretty, although very strange at the same time. The building doesn't seem to fit its purpose for some reason.

  15. I’ve been surfing online more than 2 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.

It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.
