Happy Trails on Tuesday.

The Blue Ridge Loops refers to the 18 tunnels in 13 miles on the park way
In 1905 construction began, it took 4,000 workmen mainly Russian, German and Italian
completed in 1908.  It was grueling and dangerous work
Maybe you can enlarge this photo more on your end.
It was quite sunny on this day and there was a glare on the sign.

We went through three of the tunnels

As we climbed we stopped at several overlooks

This photo was taken in the parking lot of Mt. Mitchell our final
destination and elevation

Tomorrow I will more pictures from Mt Mitchell

  4. Wow. When I was younger, we took some vacations in the area. But your pictures are stunning! It seems like we let our immigrants have all the dirty, hard, and dangerous jobs (happened with the railroad system too) - I'd like to think it's different now, but probably not.

  7. 3 tunnels in 1 day, cool. We've only been thru a couple. One in New Orleans. I think the other one is in Alabama near the coast.

  8. I like the tunnels collage. I saw my first tunnel through a mountain the same time I saw my first mountain. I was 10 years old and we were all amazed at how they could build a tunnel through all that rock... brings back memories of KY... you sure had a great trip.

  10. That looks like a fabulous area. We don't have tunnels here but Mom remembers them from when she lived in NJ.

  12. Tunnels are something that we don't see around here; we are flatlanders!

  15. Gail wants to know if the tunnels have lights and are bicycles allowed through them? (She says she cycled though some very scary dark tunnels in Croatia a couple of years ago and still has nightmares about that experience).
I, Bertie, would love to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains. They look super!
