Angel Madi was the soul and inspiration of this blog.
Truly she gave me a gazillion ideas.
M.P. was the unofficial inspiration for the blog.
He was always thinking of new and fun places to go for
photo shoots for "My Mind's Eye".
The staffer formerly known of as the unofficial Manners Police, is now
officially
Creative and Motivational Thinker aka CaMT
CaMT took me day tripping on two fun trips recently!!
On New Year's day 2020 we took the opportunity to
visit (because there was no traffic and parking was free)
downtown to see
a very modern and sleek train station. It opened in July of 2018.
This station was built upon the skeleton of the unused former home of a Dillion Supply Company
industrial building.
First and foremost we arrived at about 10 am just in time to see the Amtrak
roll in from the north heading south

From the observation deck we also got a good view of downtown Raleigh
This is a portion of the 950' long high level train platform, which is said to be the only high level train platform between Washington, DC and West Palm Beach, Florida. It was not very busy on New Year's day but you can see a few people walking to catch their train.
There is also an underground concourse leading to the platform.
INSIDE
We were thrilled to see the kept lots of the cranes and pulley system used to move the
heavy metal around the Supply company
Here is an example of the pulley (yellow track in the ceiling) holding up a very large clock.
They also kept many of the heavy metal doors where rail cars were brought in to unload and load materials and equipment.
Below are a few more pictures of the inside of Union Station in

Union Station is a multi-level building. It is used for a multitude of events other than train travel.
Still decorated for Christmas too.
Just a little trivia
The station looks lovely and shiny and new. We are wondering how frequent the passenger trains are, on a typical day. (One for CaMT to research?)
ReplyDeleteCheers! Gail and Bertie (train travellers extraordinaire).
that is the place we would love for starting a journey.... and to get s8ch a warm welcome when you leave a train there is just great!!!

A train? That makes a lot of noise and moves waaaaaaaay too fast? I will stick to my four paws thank you very much! Although Mara says that the station looks very nice.
ReplyDeleteMiaow from Miss Oswin
Mom hasn't been inside a train station in 30 years. Yours is just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the tour. Glad M.P. has been promoted to CAMT.
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing us the station.
What a great place to visit. Lots of wonderful things to see. You all have a super day.
ReplyDeleteI bet CaMT really enjoyed this visit! I have ridden Amtrak twice, both times in the winter and it was cold. I don't think it had any heat. I enjoyed the experience. I would like to take a luxury train ride... I think!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a nice train station, the one here in Greenville is the pitts and looks like a place you wouldn't want to be at.
ReplyDeleteI love all things train and this is beautiful.. I would love to see Union Station and all the views you showed us. brings back memories of the train station in savannah GA.. as a child that station as huge but when I returned to it, now a museum, it looks so much smaller view from adult vision... beautiful shots. I wish my man like to go viewing.
ReplyDeleteSadly, we have no trains here. Mom remembers the cool stations in NJ and NY.
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids
That was an interesting visit to the train station.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tour, riding the train would be more fun than fighting traffic on the freeway
ReplyDeleteI love trains. The bay area has BART and we use it to not have to drive. You're new digs are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Big hug, honey. ♥
That sure looks like a nice train station. We're glad the CaMT thought of taking you there. Of course we all know how much he likes trains too.
ReplyDeleteHow cool!! Your CaMT did a great job in choosing...We bet he also loved watching the trains too!!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a really cool building! I've only used a train while visiting Ireland and England, but not yet here in the States.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful station! I love seeing that sleek train rolling in and the way the cranes and pullies are inside the station.
ReplyDeleteThe main downtown train station in Denver is also called Union Station. I wonder why there are so many Union Stations? It's a common name :)
I do like trains!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Union Station and nice trips from the CaMT. We too have a very nice Union Station with lots of fun things to do in addition to catching a train ride.
