Wally the Dachshund always makes me giggle. I recall fond memories
of our mighty mini Dachshund Toto.
Today's Final Fiction Friday story is 100% true.
As a witness to a similar tale...I can truly relate.
Dachshunds are Great Danes in their mind's eye.
Here is My story called Fig Newtons:
Time frame: late 1970's.....
We're on another trip to Atlantic Beach, NC. On every trip we always stopped for a potty break at Neuse Sport's Shop in Kinston, NC. This particular time the humans had been snacking on Fig Newtons. When we stopped, mom closed up the bag put them in the dashboard of the car. She got out with me for a potty break while dad and sissy went inside. It was early spring so when I finished checking every blade of grass and leaving pee mail, Mom put me in the car. She made a quick trip inside. As they peeps exited Neuse Sports Shop, Mom and I locked eyeballs. To her amazement I had some how stretched my very short body to reach the dashboard where the Fig Newtons were stashed. (Note:Dad is 5'11") the seat was as all the way back. This was a long stretch even for a dachshund. I looked at Mom who was now walking faster, then I looked at the Fig Newtons, then back at Mom. Finally it was clear to me that this could be my last MEAL....so I did what any Dachshund in his right mind would do, I took one last gobble of Fig Newtons as if to say, 'I see you but you aren't here yet so here I go'. It was estimated I ate about 10 of the cookies before Mom got to the car. Thankfully we got to the beach and out of the car before I had a major case of the runs!!! Every time I had to go out I'd look at Mom pathetically as if to say, 'I know I messed up I'm so sorry....please help me'.
Note from Mom: We still don't know exactly how he got to them. Bless his little heart he had a rough few days but in no time he was once again roaming for food that was not his. Anyone who is owned by a dachshund knows where there is a will there is a way.
Last Friday for Nature Friday my good friend Boffin Bertie's post was about
his "Call of Nature". Since Bertie is a wise WFT, I'm gonna
Here are the Friendly Fill-Ins for tomorrow. Ellen 15 and meowing, came up with the first two. , Lorianne of Four-Legged Furballs came up with second two.
1. I know spring is almost here when MY Feet Start practicing my Happy Hummingbird Dance
2. I find Jealousy confusing.
3. I have a strong opinion on MANNERS.
4. A roasted duck* is the strangest thing I have ever eaten (been served).
*One of the professors I worked with at NCSU was also Editor of a European Journal, Diamond and Related Materials. Once a year a conference was held somewhere in Europe. My husband and I attended two of these the conferences, in Prague (1999) and Budapest (2001). I worked about 1/2 a day at the editorial desk. After lunch, we were tourists. While in Prague, we went out to dinner with several conference attendees. I wanted to try something I had never eaten. I ordered roasted duck. I expected it to be served sliced on my plate, like turkey. I'm told, the look on my face when the server sat the entire intact duck (minus feathers, head and feet) in front of me, the look on my face was a priceless. Very reminiscent of the last scene in A Christmas Story

Bertie and I always love to hear abut Toto the mighty mini dachshund. Hearing about Fig Newtons always reminds Gail of the time she worked for Phillips Petroleum in London. She had an (English) colleague, Chris Newton, whom all the American expats called 'Fig'. It took a while to realise that what we call 'Fig Rolls' in the UK are 'Fig Newtons' in the USA. Why Newtons, I wonder?
ReplyDeleteCheers, Gail.
amazing that a dachshound can even be much more longer than it is LOL
ReplyDeleteHari OM
ReplyDeleteBOL... oh yeah, that's the Weiner way!!! Lovely memory to share for today. Ta. YAM xx
(Struggling, but managing)
oh Toto, what a stinker you were. Happy Friday.
ReplyDeleteBummer that your prize gave you a tummy ache and the runs, Toto. Life can be so not fAire. Mom can't imagine having her dinner on the plate staring at her with lifeless eyes either.
ReplyDelete"I did not make good choices" is Bear's middle name! I can completely picture the story because Bear's done that to me too - I catch him - he knows I'm watching him - and he keeps doing it because he knows he can get away with it before I get there. It's like he gets a little extra thrill from that.
ReplyDeleteThat was funny about Toto and the Fig Newtons! I bet he didn't learn his lesson though.
ReplyDeleteToto made fast work of those fig newtons.Love the story. Hope all of you have a super day.
ReplyDeleteI can understand Toto's desire for Fig Newtons... I love them. Thank heavens they don't give me the runs. Wally the Dachshund mad me laugh! We were close to the same answer on #3 only mine was mobile/cell phone manners. I can see why manners would be a Fill-In for you after the restaurant fiasco.
ReplyDeleteYikes, Toto is lucky he didn't get REALLY sick. Great fill-ins.
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids
Toto sure was determined to have a snack. Too bad it back fired on him (pun intended).
ReplyDeleteOh, Fig Newtons gets you darn tootin' fur sure! That were good answers too!!!
ReplyDeleteToto was a very clever pup, that's for sure! Good thing those were fig newtons and not chocolates!
ReplyDeleteI tasted duck once and only once and will never again but mine was a slice... yikes. loved the doxie story, poor baby... and Bertie was right, it is the call of NATURE

I had to laugh at the runs, but we've been there too. They just can't help themselves.
ReplyDeleteLove all your fill-ins and especially the first one.
Have a fabulous day and weekend, honey. Big hugs. ♥
At least the waiter didn't chop off the head of the duck in front of you....bwahaahaa!
ReplyDeleteMy dogs always ate things that are now considered 'taboo' for dogs and lived. Can just see the thoughts running through Toto's head....
TeeHeeHee.....Toto was our kind of pup!!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Rosy, Jakey & Arty
LOL to your duck story! We lived in Belgium for three years and traveled all over Europe while we were there -- we ate some very odd things. The two years I lived in Korea ... we just won't even go there.
ReplyDeleteKZK
Now you made Mom want some Fig Newtons, the real original ones, not those new ones with the fancy flavors:)
ReplyDeleteWoos, Lightning and Timber
That's a great story! Some many things are tasty in the beginning.
ReplyDeleteI am sure the Newtons were worth a few days of discomfort
ReplyDeleteFunny story about Toto and the duck :) One time my hubby's cousin called and said he had shot some geese and wanted to give them to him. My hubby wasn't here, but I said bring them over- I think I had the same face as you when he came with 2 geese- feathers and all in a garbage bag. Ick! Thanks for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. Our hummingbirds won't be here until May. Have a nice weekend. XO
ReplyDeleteOh my! Poor Toto.....sure was a lesson learned the hard way to stay away from FIG no matter what form (or how tempting) it may be. Funny story about the duck but trust me - you've not seen anything until you've lived in Taiwan and go to a traditional fancy buffet and see all kinds of hideous and scary stuff on the table like snake, shark embryos, sea slugs.....YUCK!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Pam
Hmm, so dachshunds are a lot like schnauzers...
ReplyDeleteWell, at least the duck was headless. One time in France, an entire lobster head was served to me, straight up on the plate, with the antennas waving. My chair suddenly shot away from the table and the nice French gentleman sitting next to me threw his cloth napkin over it and waved for the garcon to take it away.
