Some people feel a need to cut their Crepe Myrtle trees back way too much
It is good to prune them but we call this
Crepe Murder to the Crepe Myrtle
Many of you thought Crepe Murder was appropriate.
On my EMW (early morning walk) on Sunday, May 1
I went by to check on the tree.
Today's photo was taken on June 17
As you can see, it is full of leaves. No buds yet.
Probably due to the severe pruning it won't bloom as early as
more mature trees that were not severely pruned.
Crepe Myrtles love hot humid weather.
In June, they show off with beautiful blooms.

Speaking of Crepe Myrtles one of ours had one branch so heavy with blooms
my resident garden had to cut them to keep the limb from breaking
He put the cut limbs in the flower pot out front for a pop of temporary color

In spite of the name, mouth of the south, that my northern cousin gave me many moons ago,

ReplyDeleteThat crepe myrtle is indestructible. Mind you, I was told that the buddleia (butterfly bush) in my cottage garden was indestructible and would benefit from heavy pruning. Now I have an ex-buddleia....

WOW - that was one of the shortest haircuts on a plant I've ever seen but just look what happened - new growth even though that horrible crime had been committed! I wish the rest of the world could recover from all the damage we've done to it like that!

That was not pruning, that was a massacre. I am surprised it recovered. I tend to prune severely, but never with a chainsaw!!!
ReplyDeleteI do love trees and I am glad it started to sprout and grow again. Mind you, I could do with the trees in my garden not to do that: there are just too many!

I am very surprised to see all the new growth on the Crepe Myrtle... really happy to see it. Our Crepe Myrtles in Missouri were very resilient. We never cut them back, just gave them a trim. They survived some pretty vicious Japanese beetle attacks.

That is a crazy tree. We would have thought for sure it was dead!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing to see so much growth on that tree after it was cut so severely. We hope they get lots of nice blooms next year. Kat looks so sweet napping on his mom's tummy.
ReplyDeleteI love crepe myrtle and have never seen one trimmed like that. i was sure it was murdered, but looks like I was wrong. Oh Kat, how we love you. you deserve to have a lap and a stomach to nap on and do it so well

It's sad to see the murder but your crepe myrtle makes up for it. It's so pretty!

ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in Texas, we used to cut our Crepe Myrtles back in the winter...but never that much!

I don't think we have any trees here in WNY that can be cut back like that and survive. That's amazing!

ReplyDeleteOur crepe myrtles mus t be shrubs rather than trees because they don't have big trunks like that one. Mom cuts them back about halfway. They are both very full and green now and the flowers should be coming soon. Crepe Murder made her laugh.

ReplyDeleteWoW! What a pruning! And look at it come back. If you did that to our trees up here in the great white norht they would be a goner. And I gotta say, Kat, none of us will tell. And I, Marv prefer our Mom, but Kozmo prefers our human brother!
ReplyDeleteToo bad that C.M. murdered can't be arrested for planticide. I've seen too many of those crepe mytrles around here cut back like that. They certainly do have a strong will to live. Kat's Mamma has a soft tummy, LOL! And as far as keeping a secret, not! LMAO!!
