On Tuesday, April 18, 2020 our friends at GBGV , the French Scent Hounds, had a most wonderful post about safety belts and harnesses for Dogs while in the car.  It reminded me of an incident with Toto the mighty Mini Dachshund.

Way back in 1977 when Toto the mighty mini Dachshund was ruler of the house, we were riding thru the city stopped at a stop light beside a big city park.  Toto was sitting in our daughter's lap she had her hand on his collar. All of a sudden Toto spotted a squirrel running in -87 seconds escaped our daughter's grip and was out the window.

The chase of the century was on at Mach Dach speed. The only good thing about this was he was on the sidewalk side of the car.  Our daughter screamed, as I jumped out of the car I told my husband to pick me up on the other side of the park.  That mighty mini short legged Dachshund ran like a Greyhound focused on tree rodent for lunch.  The only reason I caught him, was because the squirrel ran up a tree. And very thankful to report Toto was not hurt. Anytime we saw his legs moving in his sleep we knew he was dreaming of chasing that squirrel.

This photo is of Toto at his calmest...beside me in the chair belly up.

From that day on he wore his leash in the car and the window was never more than about 4" opened.

LESSON LEARNED...and FYI Toto taught us all kinds of lessons.

  1. oh what a momnt... I would scream like a banshee... we had this as we got the black maria and forgot to use the children lock for the back windows... the two daemons had the window down and hung out of the window to snap at people on the boardwalk... oh man....

  2. Well I think you might have guessed that the story about Mighty Dachshund Toto reminds Gail of a certain incident involving my predecessor Bouncing Bertie and train at Newcastle railway station....

  3. Only comment is to say the story of Toto is a lesson so many need to learn. Things can happen so, so fast ... have seen far too many beautiful, and surely well loved, dogs ~ leaning way out of car windows.

  4. It is scary when dog jumps out of a car, even if they are wearing their seat belt! We are glad a lesson was learned. Thank you for sharing and hopefully others will learn from what you went through.

Ye Gods, angel Toto - you not only gave your mama and hu-sis palpitations, this commenter at least has an increased pulse right now!!! Phew. And as for that snow, Rocky and Kat... well, I gotta say here in the Bonny Land it feels like winter came back too. Silly spring. Hugswagswhiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

  7. Yikes, that was a scary adventure for you all, though it seems Toto had a great time of it. LOL.

That snow looks pretty...but it's April. APRIL. We've had ENOUGH winter and cold temps in southeastern Ontario, thank you very much, I don't want to see another snowflake until next November/December. LOL.

  8. those are the biggest snowflakes I have ever seen. still laughing at the bed made for one with two cats upon. ha ha
the might Toto is adorable upside down by your side and i would have died of fright when he jumped out the window and did not get hurt. if you notice the photos of Beau in the car photos, the window is at a height that 81 pounds will no fit out the window. he doesn't try to go out but there is always the first time.
