Happy Tuesday Trek

Thank you to our

 Hostess Sandee at Comedy Plus

There is a new multipurpose development being built on the former property of Peden Steel
click here to read about Peden Steel

The former factory in Raleigh – a warehouse that built munitions during World War I and fabricated steel for buildings and monuments around the city.

The structure's steel bones date back to the late 1800s. When it was originally located in the Warehouse District in downtown.

It was moved it to its new location along Atlantic Ave. in the 1950s

Now, it's coming back to life as Raleigh Iron Works.

We had fun wandering around.  There will be lots of interesting shops and cafes

On TV news they indicated it was open for business so we took a field trip on the last Monday in August.   All the signs on the shop windows said Opening Spring 2023.
They might need to revise the signs.  There were only two places open for business both cafe's.  Both had hours posted Tuesday-Saturday.  Well go back to have a sandwich at
Sandwich Uptopia.  The menu looked quite unique delicious.

The new area gave us lots of
HAPPY
when we saw how much of the original steel structure they are using from the original Building.
This swing is made from steel from the original building.

Yes the swing really swings too.
Below is old steel made into border with stones in it.  This is located around the parking lot.

Now for more photos we took as we walked around.  All the store fronts had signs:  "Opening Spring 2023"  We were there in late August.

I thought about going down the slide...'thought'...
#1 reason I didn't IT WAS WET
#2 reason I didn't the landing was a bit tricky for and OLD gal.  My  knee that would have been quite UNHAPPY
I am 5'3 1/2" so that is a really big culvert.

If you missed Saturday Symmetry on Sept 23, see below sneak peep.
Raleigh Iron Works multipurpose area opening soon.

Please Come back on Happy Tuesday, September 26th  to read all about this

  2. That is a good place to have a wander around, and will be better still when everything is open. I am happy to find someone who is the same height as me!

  3. this is truly interesting. I am glad to see they are put it to reuse. I think maybe they ran into money problems or people to lease the spaces. we have places like this on every corner. they get part way through and can't go forward. I hope they can fill it with things that will draw people there. its a nice place to see all that steel. the rock/steel fence is wonderful. we have a closed kmart, closed since they went out of business years ago. we got all excited because they started to remodel and put up signs saying coming soon TARGET... its been 3 years and it is still not open or done. and now maybe never will. and then we have 15 acres of a mall that has been locked up empty for more than 3 years. I love that last part that shows what you showed us as a teaser. awesome pics. Sandwich utopia is my kind of place. i could survive on sandwiches alone

I really like this architecture and repurposing... though I admit that when I saw your post the other day, I did wonder if there would be sufficient business to fill it... these sorts of structures both in OZ and the UK suffer from the economic downturn; so many shops and offices having closed down since COVID, never mind starting up. The rents on such premises can be daunting. YAM xx

  5. That looks like a really fun place. I bet once everything opens it will be super busy. Those kind of places are the current "in" thing.

  6. Very interesting! I am always about the FOOD! The sandwich place sounds like fun. We have so many businesses that have started up and stalled. It's a rough economy. I think Covid still keeps people online to shop. Although right now it is crazy busy here and I expect it to increase as season is forced on us! I will look forward to your review of the sandwich shop!

  17. We just love when old buildings are "re-purposed" so they can continue on......I'd definitely be visiting that sandwich shop and probably going down that slide (if it wasn't wet and if my husband was waiting to catch me at the bottom!). Love that swing you're sitting on.....everything there is very clever and modern and I bet when it opens "for real" there will be a lot of fun to be had exploring it all!

    Hugs, Pam
