My peeps have lived here for nearly 34 years...mom is an avid backyard birder. Never in all these years have we had crows all over the back yard until this year. They try to land on the top of the feeder shaft it goes rockin' and rollin' then they fly off and often nearly into our dining room window. It is just plain crazy/scary!!

Being a curious cat I had to see it up close...
You will never in 87 years believe what it is...a Duck whistle/call. When mom
blew on it (without prior approval) I froze in place....every time she sees the
crows outside she goes on the porch and blows HARD.
It is so loud I'm positive the neighbors are wondering who is having duck for supper.
Many moons ago BM (before Madi) my peeps went to Branson, Missouri to see lots of stuff and musicians
and to RIDE THE DUCKS.....they have wheels that ride you on the street
Then all of a sudden hold your nose you go head first into it!! Everyone is given a duck
whistle to blow when you enter the water. Well I'm told Dad loved the whistle...so much...when they got home she put both whistles away. Dad thought she tossed them in the trash..
Needless to say Dad is elated the crows are here so he can once again play with his
duck whistle.

While we are talking about farm animals. My peeps thought they'd share this photo they rec'd from their friends who found pigs in their front yard Saturday morning.
They live just about 1 hour from the NC mountains in a semi rural area; however, there are no pigs anywhere near where they live.

That duck call is brilliant! We have HERDS of crows here too and they hog all the bird food from the feeders and hang out in our woods. I'm going to do my best Donald Duck impression next time they come here. As for that "BACON ON DELIVERY" with the pigs in the yard - VERY WEIRD that there's no farm nearby but those pigs know where a good all you can eat buffet is located obviously! Talk about FRESH BACON for breakfast!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteAs for the 'duck'...they had these in the military long ago...don't know if they still make use of them. I think it's funny that everyone blue the duck call when hitting the water. So the crows get scared off by the sound, do they?

i would snap 87 million photos and call animal control... what a surprise.. LOl that dad loved that whistle so much it was PUT away.. he he he and now he has a valid excuse to blow it. i have to say this is my first ever viewing or riding a duck into the water...
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to blow the duck whistle to get rid of the crows. We have never taken a ride on the Duck and we have been to Branson plenty of times, especially Silver Dollar City. I believe there used to be a Duck-mobile at the Lake of the Ozarks too. We would not be surprised to find pigs on the Tiny Ten. We have never had pigs show up but we have had neighbor's cows and horses and an old neighbor that is gone now, their chickens pretty much lived in our yard. Good Morning!

oooh we love duck whistles... they are funny! we sadly gave ours to a neighbor who tried to get two ducks back what escaped from his yard... but it didn't work and the peking ducks founded a family at our local pond where we have a colorful mixture of ducks now :o)

Mommy has a duck whistle too. From Philly's Ride the Ducks many moons ago.

ReplyDeleteWe had major visitors last night close to midnight. Jinx hissed up and poofed up and Mom saw a opposum at the back door. Then she chased him and saw there was another opposum who was just as mad as she was at the first opposom! It was a wild night!
I wonder if I can find a duck caller, we have LOTS of crows where we live & they compete with the Western Gulls for anything edible! It can be quite noisy!

ReplyDeleteWe haven't had crows in our yard for a number of years. They are LOUD! We have seen those duck boats in Hot Springs, Arkansas too. They look fun. Those pigs in the front yard are hilarious.
ReplyDeleteWE get all sorts of birds. We may not get as many this year as mom and dad are filling in the backyard pond (too hard to care for). Last year our tree was filled with little brown birds that pooped all over OUR lawn and made a mess. we tried to scare them off with a fake owl and to no avail. Maybe a duck whistle would work

We think we heard that duck whistle all the way here in OP:) And Mom says she has been on those same ducks in Branson and recognizes the shops on that street in the pic. She has been there a few times with the biped dancers for some of their competitions. The riverfront is such a nice place to walk.

ReplyDeleteOMD/OMC you KNOWS Ma and I HATES the crows!!!! They are nasty burdies, who are loud and creepy! Luckily this year the murder of crows have moved down a few streets, so we don't gets the annoyin' buggers as much. I gots to know if that duck call works....if they come back, Ma has got to be ready!!!!
