Secret Lives of Letters Q and R

I just received my February Reader's Digest... it has another very interesting article
"Strange but impossibly True" there are 25 delightful truths.

#15 The longest word in the English language has 189,819 letters.  It is the technical name of a protein, which lists its entire amino acid sequence and would take about 3 1/2 hours to say it out loud.  Nope the article does not tell the name of the protein.

November Reader's Digest and I happened upon this article,
"The Secret Lives of Letters", by Brooke Nelson.  Mr. Nelson says letters may be small characters, but there are amazing stories behind all 26 alphabet all-stars.

For those new to the blog...our first family pet was a mighty mini Dachshund...
I'm letting him tell you about the letter R.

Here is a short poem (pun intended) about Toto.
Toto
In (19) '74 our world was rocked when in
the door Toto marched.
His statue was tiny, his attitude was mighty.
His first night was rough, he missed the other pups.
His tiny body could nearly fit in a cup.
In no time at all we became a family, owned by this mighty mini pup.
His back was long, his legs were short. He was vertically
challenged, did he care? We think NOT. This dude was born with 'tude.
Nothing or no one was too big to rule.
His bark made such a rumble when to the door he ran
visitors were sure it was a Dane.
No one believed their eyes when a Mini Dachshund before
their eyes appeared.

  1. I found the name...but they said it needs 3 hours to pronounce it... I feel sorry for a patient whose doctor has to use this word... 3 hours on a chair in the torture room and at then end you probably will be as smart as before LOL

  2. Wow - that is one long word! I remember my gram's Cindy so well. Cindy was a full sized black and tan Dachshund and went everywhere with her. Gram never traveled without her. Cindy ruled wherever she went!

The word referred to is known in short form as the protein Titin. It and other chemical compound words are not considered as vocabular,so the Oxford Dictionaries do not register them. Others are listed though...

Toto was clearly a fine example of his dachshund kind!!! YAM xx

  26. WOW.....Q and R are interesting letters as well! Having fun with this! We loved the photos and poem about Toto. My Mom's family had a miniature long-haired dachshund named "Skoshie" - what a sweet pup he was. Not as sweet as me of course but still sweet!
