ReplyDeleteIn other words, it's the old name for an apostrophe. We were taught that the dot (yes, dot) of the i was to ensure it did not get mistaken for an 'ell' and that j only retained its dot to show it was a variant of i.. have never ever heard of tittle, thus proving there is always something to learn!!! :-) YAM xx
In Italy I always had to say 'long i' for a j, since they hardly ever used the j in their language, only for foreign words.
