Happy 2019 and Secret Lives of Letter I and J

November Reader's Digest and I happened upon this article,
"The Secret Lives of Letters", by Brooke Nelson.  Mr. Nelson says letters may be small characters, but there are amazing stories behind all 26 alphabet all-stars.

Thank you for your kind comments on my blog make over.
I'm a fan of  (only) looking at Hot Air balloons.  It hangs in the corner of the office.
I just happened to look up on a rare SUNNY day to see the shadow.
Found the background under the customized backgrounds in blogger.

  1. Hi Cecilia, Happy New Year to you and your family!
But we are puzzled by the apparently late invention of 'J' as Gail definitely remembers the letter featuring in her latin lessons at school?

Until the 16th century, the 'juh' English and other languages was actually pronounced as the Germanics still do... 'yuh' and in those older languages such as Greek and Latin as the letter I... Frenchman (not Italian) Pierre Ramus is actually credited with starting the move to adding a more defining letter. Read some fuller answers in the link that follows. YAM xx

  5. some of my finest moments are when a sunbeam touches something and changes it, and I notice it, like you did the balloon shadow... I read the post to bob and he now wonders and so do I if the dot under the exclamation point is a tittle. neither of us ever heard that word before...

  7. That is very interesting to find out that the alphabet wasn't as we know it now so many years ago. I would have thought the alphabet was complete before the 1500's.

Happy New Year to you and your hubby!

  17. Hot air balloons look fun, but haven't been tempted to go up in one. Doesn't help to have two accidents in the news in the last two weeks! Happy New Year!

  18. I've noticed and liked your new hot air balloon header too, Cecilia. I know a family named Tittle. I wonder if their ancestors were in charge of dotting the i's, he, he.
