Snapped on an early morning walk
July 11, 2024

Eastern Swallowtails are very large insects. When basking in the sun, their outspread wings can be 8 to 14 cm (3 to 5.5 inches) from tip to tip. Their colors are vibrant. Broad yellow wings are edged by black and with four stripes, like tapering chevrons from the forewing margins downward into the yellow wings.

  1. Impressive!
With the so far cool and wet summer, it has apparently been a bad year for butterflies here in the UK.

  4. They're starting to show up where dad works now as there are two butterfly bushes right in front of the main house. Hope you are staying cool, Cecilia.

  5. we have seen really large ones in the past but so far none of these are here. we are just beginning to see several different types now because all the rain has the jungle growing

  7. We are lucky here that we do see a lot of the tiger swallowtails because of all of our trees. I am disappointed that it's this late into July and I have still not seen a monarch

  10. So beautiful! We have not seen any Swallowtails but we have seen more butterflies than usual. We were not seeing many at all before this summer.

  11. Dearest Cecilia,
Living here in late summer of 1983, my Pieter took a photo of such a huge Eastern Swallowtail and wrote to his Mother: butterflies are as big as birds and birds as small as butterflies—hummingbirds.
It is one of summer's many wonders!

  17. So beautiful!!! Did we tell you about Timber finding one on Mom's pentas and just staring at it for a few minutes? The butterfly did not move, and Timber decided to taste it. Once he got it inside his mouth, he did NOT like the feel and immediately released the unharmed butterfly.
