In Purrsuit of Flavors and Wordless Wednesday

I thank Das Nelly and Phenny and Canadian Cats FOR HOSTING

Wednesday June 2nd our hosts asked us to make

 Sensational Sandwiches

I decided to make

Bratwurst and Sauerkraut Sandwiches

Phenny, Nelly, Mom and Dad I hope I make you proud with my version of a very German meal!!

Until three or four years ago, I did not have a clue how to make this delicious brats and sauerkraut.  It gets a 10 out of 10 rating in the household.

Ingredients:

1TBSP butter
6 fresh bratwursts
2 medium onions, coarsely chopped
1 medium tart apple such as Granny Smith cored and cut into small chunks
1 lb raw or canned sauerkraut, drained. I used canned sauerkraut.
1 (12 ounce bottle of dark beer, we use New Castle brown ale
pepper to taste
1 tsp caraway seed
1/2 tsp dried thyme leaves
6 large brats buns, we use Pepperidge Farm Soft White Hoagie w/ sesame seeds
Brown mustard

Directions:
1.Heat large sauté pan over medium - high heat. I use an electric skillet.
2.Add butter to melt, then add Brats
3.Brown Brats on all sides, remove and set aside.
4.Reduce heat to medium
5.Add onions, sauté til lightly brown, about 10 minutes, stirring often
6.Add apples and toss until lightly golden
7.Add sauerkraut, brats and beer, plus 1/2 ale bottle of water
8.Stir in caraway, thyme and pepper
9.Cover and simmer over medium-low heat until brats are cooked through and sauerkraut and apples are tender about 30 minutes
10.If necessary, remove the lid and cook further to remove excess moisture
11.To serve spread mustard in each roll
12.Add brat and top with sauerkraut mixture.
Potato salad is home made too.  Most people have their very own tried and true recipe for potato salad.  I make it just like my Mama made it.  No recipe just standard ingredients: boiled eggs, potatoes, sw. relish, mayo, yellow mustard, onions, salt and pepper and celery seed. The secret to my potato salad is my *resident taster. Once it is mixed *Dad of Angel Madi gives it a taste.

  3. Oh great, dad and I just read this and he's drooling all over my head. He says he hasn't had something like this in many years and would dig right into that. He used to gorge himself on hot dogs, bratwurst, kielbasa, sausage, bacon- in other words, the more fat and salt the better. Thankfully, mom's in control of his nutritional intake these days. Otherwise, he likely wouldn't be around to do this blog with me. She does occasionally get him a jar of Whole Foods sauerkraut, so he's somewhat happy.
