Look closely there are two owls here.
I absolutely love those golden eyes
Killdeer do require a few words.
Killdeer are some of the best-known practitioners of the broken-wing display, an attempt to lure predators away from a nest by feigning injury.
I have actually seen one of these birds in the feathers. Many years ago we were in a graveled parking lot. There was a roped area smack in the middle. It was around a killdeer nest. The eggs actually resemble stones.
Killdeer don't nest in cavities. They wouldn't even know what the birdhouse was for, and they would never dream of looking for their eggs there. ... Killdeer lay their eggs on the ground out in open, often among stones, hiding them in plain sight.
Often seen in dry, flat landscapes, running and halting on the ground in search of insects and earthworms. Although the Killdeer is common around human habitation it is often shy, at first running away rather than flying. When a Killdeer stops to look at an intruder, it has a habit of bobbing up and down almost as if it had hiccupped. Near the nest, Killdeer distract predators by calling loudly, bobbing, and running away. Pairs of Killdeer tend to stay together for one to a few years.
Oh those owls are indeed magnificent. I had never before heard of Killdeer. What a marvel of evolution they are. Absolutely fascinating!
ReplyDeleteThanks to you and to Bob and Carol for bringing us such a wonderful Nature Friday post.
Cheers, Gail.

The owls are just magnificent! We learned something new today. We've never seen a Killdeer before and knew nothing about him.
ReplyDeleteA killdeer. Never heard of one of those before. It looks a bit less murderous than I expected to see. Unless they are baddies at night?

The owls are beautiful. I have never heard of Killdeer. When I saw the title I expected to see some breed of deer!
ReplyDeleteThe owls are just amazingly beautiful. Very familiar with Killdeer and have enjoyed their antics for years. Interesting to read about them this morning and that is a fine photo! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. We didn't know about Killdeer!

Beautiful owls. I have not seen one here in a while. Happy, happy 4th of July.
ReplyDeleteAt one of our local preserve I stepped off the wooden path and the ranger said please stay on the wooden path because there's eggs out there that you can't see and they're just laying out there and you might step on them and not even know you stepped on them. Maybe it was killdeer eggs. As far as I know I have never seen one or seen an hour like this one I've only seen two hours in my lifetime in the wild. I can tell you that if I was invited to a owl viewing I would certainly want to go
ReplyDeleteThose owls are magnificent! It did take us a few seconds to see that there were 2 in that one picture.
ReplyDeleteWe were so impressed with the owl pictures. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThose are really wonderful photos, really!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad everyone enjoyed the owls! There were more of them that we weren't able to get decent photos of but if we do we'll share! Thanks for the post Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteOne problem with that killdeer ploy. When we first had our house built, the lots around us were flat, empty open areas of dirt and stones. One day a killdeer decided that would be a good place to lay her eggs. We watched her for several days and hoped the young would hatch and run away. Unfortunately, someone bought that empty lot so that they could build a house on it. A bulldozer came and ran over the eggs. Hopefully she found a better nesting place after that!
ReplyDeleteI love owls. They are so beautiful. We love sitting on the back of our boat and when it gets dark the owls begin to talk to each other. We always smile.
ReplyDeleteLove the facts about the Killdeer owls. I didn't know this.
Have a fabulous day and weekend, honey. Big hug. ♥
Those owls and their photos are just beautiful. We often hear owls in the woods near our home, but we have never actually spotted one of them. Thanks for telling us about the killdeer - very interesting background.
