NCArt Museum and Symmetry Saturday

Three Shades
by Auguste Rodin

The Three Shades is a sculpture created by Auguste Rodin. He was inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy where the souls of the damned, called shades stand at the entrance of Hell as they point at an inscription that states "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here."

  1. The Three Shades is my least favourite of Rodin's sculptures, not for artistic value but for what it depicts. I believe he originally had the sculpture on top of the gates of Hell but later sculpted another larger free standing version.
The views of the lake and the Atlantic are lovely.

I know nothing about the sculpture.

  3. I've always thought The Three Shades captured the feeling of the entrance to hell but it's SOOOO depressing! Pretty views of the water.

I too am enjoying the fenced views... and am a fan of Rodin's work. Others may like to know (if they didn't already) that the Musee Rodin<, which cast this particular model in 1981 per that plaque, are only permitted to make a maximum of 12 casts of each of Rodin's works? There are three others in the USA alone. YAM xx

  7. nothing compares to an ocean view or in our case a gulf view. so beautiful. the art is really good and it is perfect for the gate to hell. that said, not something I would want to view often. I know nothing about Dante or the artist

  12. That's kind of a scary statue, if you ask me. But the sights from the Ocean gave me hope of Spring.
