River Otters Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium

Staff Welcomed Two Otter Brothers, Pee Dee and Rocky a few years ago.

Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. — Two new North American river otters, Pee Dee and Rocky, will add additional adorable antics to the North American River Otter habitat at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

The two, 9-month-old otters, both male, come from a litter of otter pups born at Milwaukee County Zoo in Milwaukee, WI as part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan®(SSP) Program. Their mother and a sister are both still at Milwaukee County Zoo.

Both Pee Dee and Rocky are named after North Carolina rivers and will share a space with the Aquarium’s current otters, Eno the oldest otter (17y.o.)

I recall from the tour that Eno always floats on his back
The bubbles you see are coming from their under coat as they swim

  3. I love otters. They used to come up the stream from the river and then into our neighbour's fish ponds. He doesn't love them as he now has no fish left, and they no longer come visiting.

  5. That had to be really fun watching the Otters swim like that. Such graceful animals in the water. And of course your angel was very graceful also who else can take a box and renovated so quickly and smoothly.

  7. otters swim so effortlessly and are so much fun to watch. we once saw 2 playing in the creek at Bray Park, about 10 years ago, and maybe 5 years ago one ran from the park across the buys street in front of our car at 5:30 am, while we were on our way to the YMCA.... talk about a thrill. I did not know they came in different heights and sizes.. the ones in our park were like the biggest one on the sign.

  12. Hi Pee Dee and Rocky!
Angel Madi...you had a perfect routine for getting the box and making it yours and perfection with putting your back to it! Nothing but great results with that addition!

  13. I am a lover of otters too! They are adorable!
Madi had some great advice for making a box your own. It's those renovations that wear you out!
