Dear Auntie HiC,
A few weeks ago I received special a request from our good friends at da tabbies o trout towne regarding bears and salmon.
It just so happens that Mom knows a good bit about salmon. In the summer of 1996, the Peeps spent 3 weeks camping in Alaska & Canada.
They spent time with friends, Wayne, Scarlett & Matt Hall, who live on the Yukon River in Eagle, Alaska.
Salmon is a common and beneficial food for sled dogs. Historically salmon was a staple in their diet, especially in regions like Alaska where salmons runs are abundant.
Salmon provides essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids & protein, which are important for sled dogs health and performance.
Bears consume large quantities of salmon during the summer to build up fat reserves for the long winter hibernation.
Sled dogs & bears also find it yummy for the tummy!
Mom spent a day in the river helping (staying out of the way) catch and clean the fish. The tall gentleman with the cane, Chief, makes the nets & helps pull them out of the river. Chief is also blind. One of the nicest men Mom has ever met.
Quite an experience!
Thanks for the question & enjoy the video of the delicious salmon!

ReplyDeleteOMC, Rocky, that was an amazing memoir post - what a wonderfurs time your peeps must have had. So many excellent photos to relive those days. Hugs and whiskeries YAM-aunty xxx
Very interesting. I've never been to Alaska but my brother was there once and said it was beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMom had some good times in Alaska in the summertime back when she was flying. The pilots would sometimes go salmon fishing on layovers and bring back big coolers of salmon. Since Mom doesn't eat any fish or seafood it was never something for her. We all get some salmon in our food every morning.
ReplyDeleteRocky you are such an intelligent kitty. We appreciate this information on Alaska because we don't think we will go there anytime soon. But we love looking at the pictures. We are glad that Miss Kit and Miss C got to be such good friends so that you all can tell us so much.
ReplyDeleteMom has never been to Alaska but she would sure love to go! Mom and I both love salmon!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun video about catching and processing salmon.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great vacation that must have been for your folks Rocky. We loved the slide show!

ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Happy Tuesday. Love and hugs to Auntie C and Kit and lots of scritches to the kitties. ♥
An awesome experience.
ReplyDeleteWhat excellent information! I'm sure the bears and dogs don't get all the salmon, although it may seem like it sometimes.
ReplyDeleteMy Daughter-in-Law is from Alaska although she has lived there and here in the swamps growing up with family in both places.

ReplyDeleteVery interesting about the sled dogs having salmon as a staple in their diet! I would have never guessed. Sounds like a wonderful vacation for your Peeps, Rocky. Very cool how your Mom and Auntie HiC met in a chat room. I mean, seriously, how cool and serendipitous in that?
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of very good and interesting information Rocky. Thank you. We are not happy because Chewy just told us that the canned food with salmon that we like is being discontinued by its manufacturer:(. We don't like to hear that at all.
