Dear Auntie HiC,
This edition of Fun Facts with Rocky delves into the practice of “niksen.”
Niksen is a Dutch verb derived from "niks," meaning "nothing".
It's the art of doing nothing, not in a passive or unproductive way, but as a deliberate act of relaxation and mental rejuvenation.
Research suggests that niksen can help reduce stress, combat burnout, and boost creativity. Some studies suggest it can also help improve focus and overall well-being by allowing the mind to wander and recharge.
The Dutch have purr-fected the practice of
niksen so well that they are considered
some of the happiest people on earth.
Rocky takes his Niksen very seriously.
ReplyDeleteniksen is a cool word.. shakespeare would like it... much ado about niksen ;o)
ReplyDeleteNIksen, huh? That's gonna be my new favorite word as it's what my life is all about.

ReplyDeleteAha... translation... time out! Hugs and whiskeries YAM-aunty xxx
At age 81, I practice "niksen" on a regular basis without even intending to ... my mind wanders. Whether it recharges is open to question ...
ReplyDeleteOh, I want to take a Niksen workshop :)
ReplyDeleteDear Rocky, evidently you and I both have some Dutch in us. We have purrfected the art of napping and relaxing. However this morning in the pitch dark I'm starting off my day by being out in the patio in the dark watching for bats and moths. Then I'll sleep the whole day long.
ReplyDeleteDoing nothing does feel really good but these days it is hard to do nothing. We have learned to always be busy doing something. The German word is nichts. Dutch and German have a lot of similar words.
ReplyDeleteRocky, you are a master of niksen! The North American culture doesn't hold much regard for deliberate rest and relaxation (broad statement), but life certainly would be healthier and happier if we did!
ReplyDeleteHappy Tuesday too... we need some fun indeed each day 😄
ReplyDeleteWell my goodness, I sure did not know that.
ReplyDeleteRocky, I think you have mastered niksen. I have been practicing the art of doing nothing the last couple of months because of the heat.
ReplyDeleteI think Niksen may have to be practiced more here at our place Rocky...You do look like an expert!
