As you all know Brian Crane's
Pickles is one of our favorite cartoons.
This one aired on June 8, 2020. I knew immediately it would
be a perfect Final Fiction Friday Post.
The cat in the cartoon is Feline Friday
Our daughter was 11 at the time and Toto the mighty mini Dachshund
was about 7. Our new neighbors were excited to learn that our daughter was an animal lover and not at all intimidated by Toby's size. They asked if she would pet sit for them. It was July. They were eager to go on vacation but hated to leave Toby in the kennel.
Our daughter went over to discuss the caring and tending of Toby.
Before she left she asked where his water bowl was.
They said in the foyer 1/2 bath. Be sure not to close that door it is the only place he will drink water.
She said ok not thinking anything about it.
So the next morning before his walk she filled up his kibble bowl. Then went into the 1/2 bath to fill up his water bowl.
Toby followed her and quickly begins to drink out of the toilet.
Needless to say she was stunned...but he was happy as a lark. From that day forward
she flushed the toilet every day to be sure Toby had fresh, cool water.
For the remainder of the summer she and Toby had many happy visits.
Being owned by a vertically challenged Dachshund it never crossed our mind the toilet
bowl was often a water bowl.

I might add here Toto the mighty mini Dachshund and Toby the Giant
golden had quite the relationship. I'm not sure Toby knew what Toto was..
Toto was always elated to see Toby running circles around him. Toby just stood there as
Toto used Toby as an obstacle course. Running between, in and out of Toby's legs.
As with most Dachshunds Toto was FEARLESS. If Toby would not play
with him,Toto would nip a the feathery golden fur on Toby's back legs.
Lucky for Toto, Toby was truly a Gentle Giant.
Nature Friday These next two photos were taken just a few blocks from our house
I don't know what these are but I love every thing about them....

ReplyDeleteYes, Easy's mum is right - aka Foxglove. The one beside it may be a spirea variant... and LOVED the toilet tale!!! Thanks for joining in FFF. YAM xx
Yes it's a a foxglove. The most important flower surely! (Says this wire-haired FOX terrier, who has never ever drunk out of a toilet bowl). We see lots of these handsome, colourful flowers when out on our walks at this time of year, on waste ground and the edges of the woods.
ReplyDeleteToodle pip!
Bertie.
PS Gail says: Bertie has drunk from filthy puddles, much worse than clean toilet bowls, in his time...
Oh yes, water bowls are great, but puddles and birdbaths work just as well. According to Miss Oswin anyway...

I loved your story about Toby. It reminded me of a high school friend who had a poodle named Judy. Judy did the exact same thing!
ReplyDeleteThat is a funny story about the toilet. We always had to make sure the lid was down because Eric had a water fascination and would lean in and play with it. I don't think he ever drank it though.
ReplyDeleteSweet story about Sissy. Toto was a fearless warrior.
ReplyDeleteI planted Foxglove this year. I'm hoping it will re-seed for me.
A lovely new header you have! Cartoon is a great intro to M and Toby's story. The flowers are beautiful for Nature Friday!
ReplyDeleteThat was sure a cute cartoon and Toby sounds cool!
ReplyDeleteThat toon made us MOL. Beautiful flowers.

I love that cartoon too. Always fun. Our Little Bit had her water bowls here and there, but she would drink out of the toilet bowl too. We just let her. It's the way of dogs.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Feline Friday Blog Hop.
Have a purrfect Feline Friday and weekend. Big hug, honey. ♥
We love all your tales today. Here's one of ours. About a year ago Millie started drinking out of the toilet on the first floor. At the time we only had one bowl of water for them in the house that was upstairs (don't ask why - not mom's idea) and since Millie is a bit older now we think she got tired of having to go upstairs to drink and happen to "discover" the endless bowl of water in the powder room. Since then the toilet lids stay down and there is a fresh bowl of water for the pups in the powder room now.
ReplyDeleteHi C !!! ☺☺☺ what a great post today about the pups and your daughter. brought back
ReplyDeletememories of my grandparents german shepherd who drank from the toilet !!! foxglove it is; I've heard that if it's super hot where one lives, they need shade ??? your neighborhood is AWESOME and so is your lake !!! ♥♥♥☺☺☺
Thanks for sharing the funny comic strip. We just love the beautiful flowers for Nature Friday. They are very gorgeous colors. Have a fantastic upcoming weekend.

I totally LOVE Pickles. It's smack on the nose in humor every single time!!!~
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous flower. I love it too. I hope someone knows what it is.
Loved the story of Toto and Toby! And Toto's water bowl! Fox Glove? I wonder if it's wild...
So glad to see you today.
Love the funny comic. Those flowers are just gorgeous but don't know what they are. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteOut of my 75 years I have never had but three years of not having a dog and I've never had one drink out of the commode. Yuck! I enjoyed the story a lot I can just see the Dachshund running in and out those furry legs flowers are beautiful I've never seen the foxglove but I've read about it in the books that they use it for murder
ReplyDeleteLove & miss pickles! Your flower finds are stunning. Everyone already told you what they are, so no need for me to repeat. Keep safe you two!
ReplyDeleteThat was a funny story. Beautiful blooms. XO
ReplyDeleteToto and Toby sounds like Sunny and Jacob BOL! Foxglove is blooming all over the place here...it's one of my favorite flowers!!
ReplyDeleteMom loves pickles too:) She makes sure she points out the really good ones to our Dad:)
ReplyDeleteWe can't get to that big water bowl here because of all the gates, but Mom says she had other dogs years ago that loved that water and loved to sleep wrapped around the bowl.
The roses and foxgloves are beautiful.
Thanks for all your kind words to welcome Misty home. And for your sweet card that arrived today!!! You are so kind.
Woos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber
What a sweet (?) story about Toto and Toby !
ReplyDeleteWe haven't lived with dogs, so we enjoy pupper stories!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers, but I cannot figure out what those are either....
We love Pickles too
ReplyDeleteThe bigger pink flowers are called fox glove. This is what old time chemists made the drug digitalis from, which is used to treat heart failure. When I became a nurse 39 years ago, almost every elderly person with heart failure was treated with "dig and lasix." These days, digitalis is made synthetically, and rarely used since there are now better drugs available, but the flowers are still beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWe've had four doggies in this house, and not one of them drank water from the toilet. Miss Ginger loved to take used tissues out of the trash can next to the toilet, though. We had to get a special can with a lid that she couldn't open.
We love reading the Pickles comic too!
Oh, that doggie story was PAWSOME! I don't drinks from the toilet...probably cause Ma keeps the lid down, cause she never wanted any doggie to gets any ideas....BOL!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Ruby ♥
LOVE the cartoon!! The shrub roses are so pretty and perfect for a mailbox or like our neighbor has them - around their street lamp. Foxgloves too are so pretty - interesting flowers.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Pam
What a sweet story about two friends, and a little girl (well, pre-teen). Thanks for the smile
ReplyDeleteWe had a wonderful Golden Retriever named Tucker. He would drink out of the toilet if we accidentally left the lid up. When Bentley came along and was in his hero worship phase, he did everything Tucker did and to see his squatty body and long ears trying to drink out of the toilet was priceless. Great memories.
