I recently watched Christmas Quest, on Hallmark.
What beautiful scenery and lights. This is
The Yule Cat, or Jólakötturinn in Icelandic, is a giant, vicious cat from Icelandic Christmas folklore that eats children who don't receive new clothes before Christmas Eve:
- The Yule Cat is described as a huge cat with glowing eyes that towers over homes and forests.
I took the photo from the TV with my iPhone
- The Yule Cat prowls the snowy countryside on Christmas night, looking in the windows of each house it passes by. It looks through the presents the children have received and eats the children who didn't receive new clothes.
- The legend of the Yule Cat is thought to have originated as a way to encourage farmers to finish their work in time so that everyone had enough supplies to make clothing. It was also used to convince children to do their chores so they would receive new clothes on Christmas morning.

ReplyDeleteCrikey, that has potential for a Christmas terror franchise at Disney!!! YAM xx
Well that would certainly be scary for some children. I'm pretty sure we always got some new clothes for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI did know of that folklore but had forgotten it. It is a scary thing to tell the children!
ReplyDeleteYikes! LOL! These old folklore tails are very interesting. I keep forgetting to tell you how much I love your headers. Sending hugs!
ReplyDeleteI watch Hallmark channels all the time and haven't seen this one yet. I will watch next time it's on!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun sparkly cat and a great story. I'll have to look for that Hallmark movie. And I see that Angel Madie is hanging with the ornaments.
ReplyDeleteThat explains why folks always give socks! Just as well I carry on that tradition here at home. I always get Mrs H cleaning gloves, sturdy boots, and cleaning liquids, MOL
ReplyDeleteERin
I saw part of that movie, not all of it. Those folklore tales certainly could be gruesome (eating the children)!
ReplyDeleteWe have been watching our share of Hallmark. I enjoy them but after Christmas I am done with them until Fall rolls around again. We haven't seen the one you mention but I am sure it is recorded. That is a spooky Christmas tale. I have never heard about it.
ReplyDeleteSweet new header with Angel Madi watching over the season.
We've never hear of the Yule Cat and think it's a bit terrifying.
ReplyDeletefirst I have heard of a Yule cat and agree it is scary.. but so were all my favorite fairy tales as a child. I wore the pages out reading that big book of fairy tales.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of the Yule Cat, but I love these sorts of things. Lee and Phod who hope that dogs don't need new clothes
ReplyDeleteNew one on me. Eats kids... sounds almost like a XMAS horror story.
ReplyDeleteThe Yule Cat doesn't sound like a very friendly furry.
ReplyDeleteWe love your header too, love seeing Angel Madi.
Woos - Misty and Timber
Now THAT is disturbing! *shiver*
ReplyDeleteIt must be a myth, no cat is that bad MOL!
ReplyDeleteThe photo came out great. XO
ReplyDeleteI don’t think I would like to run into Yule Cat!
ReplyDeleteFascinating
ReplyDeleteScare tactics at Christmas? Not my cup of tea, but I can understand it's a cultural thing.
