I will let these photos tell the
Tale of two talented hands
Grandma Upchurch aka Margie, Bryan's Mother.
She was also an excellent seamstress. She learned to sew
before there were fancy things like zipper foots. She could put in a zipper better by hand than I could by machine.
She wore the hand crochet collars around dresses or blouses
that just had round necks.
I have two pillow cases with the gorgeous border...
Doily
I never saw Margie use a crochet pattern. She had a picture of what she wanted in her head.
Feline Friday Madi adored Christmas for many reasons, especially for the beautiful crocheted Christmas tree Skirt that was also hand made with love by Grandma Upchurch many, many years ago.

#8 North Carolina's State Mammal
1969 the Gray Squirrel was designated NC's state mammal. It's found throughout the state from our eastern swamps to our hardwood forests.
AND IN OUR BACK YARD
The import of this mammal has largely displaced it red cousins in England and Wales.
Today's photos were from a past posts but still apply today.
I have 3 watering holes in the back yard
A standard bird bath
Two mini watering holes shown below.
Of course the Squirrels aka piggies use all of them...
All of the watering holes are under a tree and even the smaller birds are using it. Many years ago I had a flock of cedar waxwings stop in for a sip...Very thankful I was there to snap this photo
Good morning Cecilia and Angel Maddi. Such treasures you have from your dear grandmother, such a talented lady to create everything you have shown us today. The photo of Madi with her Christmas tree skirt is adorable! I also love how you take care of your feathered and furry friends withe the water baths. I didn’t know the squirrel was the state mammal of NC or about their red cousins in England and Wales. A wonderful post, thank you and sending hugs xo
ReplyDeleteGrandma Margie's crochet work is beautiful. Yes it is very rare to see a red squirrel in England although they can still be found in Scotland. I assume they are rare in Wales too.
ReplyDeletewhat a great way to create a watering hole. love it. I had several of the collars, but none of them were like these. Amazing works or art is what these are... all my aunts and my mom, crocheted doilies and pillow cases. some of them were talented, some just good and I could not even make a chain... but I did have doilies under everything in the house, and still have two under the lamps in the bedroom
ReplyDeleteMargie was very talented. I saw a red squirrel in our hayfield a few weeks ago. It's the first red one that I've seen on our property in all the years I've lived here.
ReplyDeleteFantastic post today. Everything Is Beautiful in it. My grandmother taught me how to crochet starting when I was 6 years old and it is the thing I still do. She also made things with that looking at a pattern including complicated dailies. Perfect watering hoe for birds in fur. I love Cedar waxwings and I'm lucky to see them once or twice a year.
ReplyDeleteGramma is a seamstress, she would see something in a store, go find the fabric and make it for herself. She sewed clothes for the whole family but now she can't see, almost blind really so she can't sew and it makes her really frustrated. Mom can sew but she sews more house stuff like curtains. Those old sewing crafts are so special and are now so lost in the new generations, it is sad.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, you're grandmother was talented! Beautiful crochet work!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to have a watering hole - - definitely provides lots of photos ops!
Beautiful crochet pieces. I had a neighbor who used to crochet those collars and had given me one. I don't know if I ever wore it though. My grandmother was quite the seamstress herself. She actually worked at a zipper company for years.

ReplyDeleteOh my word - I have crochet envy! What a talent!!! And I like your nature shots - I really must start to get some new ones at my end..... YAM xx
Grandma Margie had a gift for beautiful crochet. I know you cherish her pieces. The Christmas tree skirt is amazing.
ReplyDeleteAll the critters are lucky to have your backyard offerings! I love Cedar Waxwings. I have a picture in my mind of a tiny chipmunk using the brick steps :)
Those crochet collars from Grandma Margie are a treasure! I wish I had some of the pieces my grandmothers crocheted. We love having bird baths to attract the birds and other animals. When we've been in a dry spell sometimes you can catch a squirrel jumping up on the bird bath to get a drink.
ReplyDeleteGrandma Upchurch's handiwork is just gorgeous! Love the cedar waxwings!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, those doilies are ust GORGEOUS! Such delicate and detailed, Margie was so very talented!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Beth

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love when the Cedar Waxwings come in a huge flock into the yard and eat everything that they can. They are their most well dressed bird out there. Feathers so smooth as to look painted on. They are flawless.
ReplyDeleteOH OH.. I love the crocheted collars. My Grandmother on Daddy's side was always crocheting but always bedspreads, tablecloths..things for the house.
ReplyDeleteThose are sure pretty. My Grandma used to make those crocheted things, she was pretty amazing with that. Angel Madi is so cute.
ReplyDeleteShe was quite talented. All her pieces are beautiful. I love the shot of Angel Madi under the tree. XO
ReplyDeleteWow, she made beautiful items.
ReplyDeleteAngel Madi certainly did seem to be enjoying the tree skirt. Thank you for linking up to Feline Fridat!
