One of our hosts for Nature Friday host LLB Gang
There are 11 houses on my cul-de-sac. Many years ago one of our techie neighbors set up a
Cowden Court Chat Text. Recently, I received this text from Jennifer:
"This hawk might be why the birds aren't visiting our feeders"
I replied: I agree and it might be why the hummingbirds flew south earlier than usual.
I keep a birding log. I always have hummingbirds til at least early October. I haven't seen one since September 26th. 2024 my last sighting was 8 am October 8th. I noted that the temperature on the evening of Oct 7th was 43.
Jennifer replied: That her husband hasn't seen a hummingbird is some time.
Another neighbor replied:
The hawk is now hiding in the tree in your front yard.
Can you see him on the lowest branch on the left
My next door neighbor took this video from her patio door
For the record I will say, our cul-de-sac has an over population of Chipmunks and Squirrels
If a hawk is patient they will come to him. As you can tell from the first photo of the hawk, it has not missed a meal in a long time.

ReplyDeleteYup, that hawk sure looks like he's claimed territory! Exciting in its own way, but a shame for the other birdlife. Awww Madi.... YAM xx
The hawk does look like it's been eating well.
ReplyDeleteThat picture of Madi behind bars is too funny
You don't mess with the hawks as they don't take no for an answer. I've been chased by one and he pulled the hair on my head and all because I was doing my yard jobs and I got too close to his/her nest. You are too cute and sweet to be in jail, Madi!
ReplyDeleteLet that girl out of jail, lol. I bet she would have loved to been looking out the back door when a hawk was landed on someone's patio. My hummingbirds have been gone since probably September the 25th or 26th. But I would have thought they would have seen your house before they continued farther.
ReplyDeleteWe have a hawk here too (Sparrowhawk). We feed the birds, mostly sparrows, but he doesn't seem to interested in them. He sits a lot of the day on the telephone pole or the field gate. I think he is more interested in the mice. Maybe he should be called a mouse hawk! I feed the birds by the leylandii hedge, so as soon as they here wings, it is easy for them to dive inside.
ReplyDeleteCute photos of an imprisoned Madi.
The hawk is gorgeous. I watched one lazily circling overhead a few days ago, when I was out for a walk.
ReplyDeleteMadi, I'd have posted bail for you! 😁
I saw a giant hawk in the hayfield yesterday. Biggest I've seen. Madi, you are the cutest convict I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteHawks are nasty birds. They even go after small dogs sometimes. We are certain that smaller birds steer clear if they know of one in the area.
ReplyDeleteI think this is the time of year to see hawks. We have one that has set up shop in our neighbors Oak. Not good to be sitting on the lanai and see it bring something it has killed up to its favorite branch. He looks very much like the first photo. We checked for ID and we think it is a Red-shouldered Hawk??? It's a screamer... tired of hearing it.
ReplyDeleteAwww, Angel Madi, you needed a get out of jail free card!
Your post helped me to fill out one of the Fill-Ins for today.
DeleteWhat a pretty hawk....the hummingbirds here like when we have a resident hawk, it kept the roadrunners(who are big hummer hunters) away. But we can tell when a hawk is near because all the other birds scatter!
ReplyDeleteAngel Madi had the best "attitude" BOL!

Sweet Diva looks innocent to me❣️😻❣️ Looks like y’all have a new neighbor in the hood! 😉
ReplyDeleteMy momma said she is a total Raptor fan. She loves hawks too. The whole family does. He looks wonderful but..I understand why some folks don't care for them. I was unfortunate enough to see a luncheon choice done by a make Cooper's Hawk and was sad about the Mockingbird for a while. Squirrels...go git 'em, Hawks!
ReplyDeleteMy husband is always shooing the hawks out of the yard, but I always tell him they need to eat too. That's a fun flash back from Madi.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. A feline 🐈 prisoner. LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteHere the hawks carry off cats and small dogs. That's a cute flashback!
ReplyDeleteI hope it didn't eat the hummingbirds. I love the flashbacks of Madi. xO
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to think about, but the hawks have to eat, too.
ReplyDeleteMadi, I hope you didn't have to spend a night in the hoosegow.
Thank you for linking up with Feline Friday.
That is a commanding picture of the hawk
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea to have a text set up between neighbors. I've never thought of that here. I might suggest it with ours. I was wondering why our birds had been a no-show for a while. They are gradually coming back. I have had hawks in our area but usually see them. Never know though I guess. Diva Madi, so cute! I'll send bail any time :) Love your Fall header. Hugs, Denise
ReplyDeleteBy bail money, I'm sure Angel Madi meant bail treats, BOL! Our cul-de-sac neighborhood is maybe 3 or four times bigger than yours. We all just use the Nextdoor app. It includes a lot more neighborhoods. But I love the idea of having one just for us. Looks like yours will soon be free of both squirrels and chipmunks. Our population has decreased drastically with all the stray and just loose cats running around the neighborhhood.
