As of 6pm on Saturday 1/8/18 Raleigh had over 180 consecutive hours of temperatures below freezing and many days only 20 degrees and some nights in the single digits...VERY x 87 million unusual for us. WRAL TV has a fountain in front of the tv station.
To keep the water pipes from busting they have to leave the fountain running or drain it completely.
Over the years it has become a very popular place to take winter photos.
This one was taken 1/6/18
We are tickled pink to say our high yesterday was a balmy 46 tropical degrees
Mom decided she wanted to have her photo taken in front of it so they braved the
tropical temperatures of 22 degrees on 1/6/18 to snap this photo.
Mom had 3 sweaters on under her coat
Mom is 5'3 1/2" tall the fountain is coming close to being over 10' tall
This is the tallest we have seen it.
How fun for your human to pose in front of that fountain - although I bet she was really, really glad to get back inside afterwards!
ReplyDeleteMost impressive ice fountain, and brave Mom. But Gail says she is going to knit her a thick woolly hat!
ReplyDeleteToodle pip!
Bertie.
That is COLD! What an incredible sight.
ReplyDeleteoooh that looks like a giant ice cream cake ;O))) ...and the mama howled today for the 3°c(37f)... she is a chicken...
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! That's some fountain and I agree with Phenny that it looks like a giant ice cream cone. YUM!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Teddy
Wow! That will make a lot of ice cubes when it finally defrosts!

ReplyDeleteMOL... like Bertie's Gail, as impressive as this fountain is, I was taken with the fact that three sweaters-worth of wear would best be topped with a head covering - where most of our body heat escapes!!! I am also impressed that mum can wear three sweaters beneath her coat and still look slim. Not like Michelin YAM, here... hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx
That fountain looks amazing but VERY cold!!!
ReplyDeleteBrrrr, this Princess would not want to venture out in 3 sweeter sorta cold
Loves and licky kisses
Princess Leah xx

ReplyDeleteit's beautiful and i am glad i am viewing it through your camera lens not in real life. that is way to cold for my Florida bones. yesterday we went back to our normal temps, high was 70 and the rest of the week is mild. but we never got that cold, never got below 38, but a few days of that had us all shivering like crazy
ReplyDeleteThat is just amazing. We are so happy that your Mom braved the cold so we could see that beautiful ice fountain.
ReplyDeleteWoos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber
That sure is cold for your area. We bet it will take a while for all that ice to melt. Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteGreat picture mom. The weather has been super crazy here in MS too
ReplyDeleteWow, that fountain is pawesome! We had about a week of super cold temps, but it's been okay since then.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's amazing!
ReplyDeleteAround here, all outdoor fountains are turned off in the wintertime, which is why I like shopping malls whose fountains are always running! Nothing like the splash of water to bring me peaceful thoughts.
ReplyDeleteWow, you southerners are getting a taste of our winter BUTT our winter isn't even that cold (so far)!
ReplyDeleteKeep Calm & Bark On!
Murphy & Stanley
That is quite impressive!XO
ReplyDeleteWow. Not THAT'S cool! The Boy moved here from Florida and he's still convinced this weather is normal for us. But we haven't had this many below freezing days in a row since 1983. At least things warm up for a couple days before it tanks again!

The fountain looks beautiful. Well done to your mom for braving the cold for a photo.
ReplyDeleteWow! That frozen fountain is amazing. We also broke a record here...most consecutive days under 20 degrees. Fortunately, today it made it to about 40, a heat wave!!
ReplyDeleteThe frozen fountain is beautiful. Glad it has warmed up some. We are in the 40's today - kinda strange for January in Idaho but we won't complain

Hazel & Mabel
What beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteBrrrr. It got up to 34 today. Mom was filling up the feeders and taking the trash out in just a sweater as after minus 8 it felt tropical.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo of your Mom!
Abby Lab
It looks cold, so I’m glad you’re mom had those sweaters.
ReplyDeleteIt was about 23 here today and we celebrated it being warm lol! It is what you get use to!
ReplyDeleteThat fountain is gorgeous! Wow - And it is twice as tall as your mom! I'm glad that it's warming up a bit. It seems that winter has forgotten us... and we actually like winter here in CO!
ReplyDeleteWOW! That is amazing! We used to see a few of those around when we lived in Midway but they were not that big!

Wow, that's a LOT Of ice! Leaving the water running in the fountain to prevent it freezing seems like a good idea, but it looks like they kept adding water during the cold hours to make that much ice!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is crazy cold. We did see a fountain frozen here the other day but our cold is gone until the weekend. It will be back in the teens again. Do you think that is why everyone is getting the flu around here? Our hospitals are full. We don't go around people. LOL!
ReplyDeleteAw, this was a really nice post. In idea I would like to put in writing like this additionally – taking time and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means seem to get something done.
