Tuesday Frozen Tundra Tale

As of 6pm on Saturday 1/8/18 Raleigh had over 180 consecutive hours of temperatures below freezing and many days only 20 degrees and some nights in the single digits...VERY x 87 million unusual for us.  WRAL TV has a fountain in front of the tv station.
To keep the water pipes from busting they have to leave the fountain running or drain it completely.
Over the years it has become a very popular place to take winter photos.
This one was taken 1/6/18
We are tickled pink to say our high yesterday was a balmy 46 tropical degrees

Mom decided she wanted to have her photo taken in front of it so they braved the
tropical temperatures of 22 degrees on 1/6/18 to snap this photo.
Mom had 3 sweaters on under her coat
Mom is 5'3 1/2" tall the fountain is coming close to being over 10' tall
This is the tallest we have seen it.

  1. How fun for your human to pose in front of that fountain - although I bet she was really, really glad to get back inside afterwards!

MOL... like Bertie's Gail, as impressive as this fountain is, I was taken with the fact that three sweaters-worth of wear would best be topped with a head covering - where most of our body heat escapes!!! I am also impressed that mum can wear three sweaters beneath her coat and still look slim. Not like Michelin YAM, here... hugs and whiskeries, YAM-aunty xxx

  11. it's beautiful and i am glad i am viewing it through your camera lens not in real life. that is way to cold for my Florida bones. yesterday we went back to our normal temps, high was 70 and the rest of the week is mild. but we never got that cold, never got below 38, but a few days of that had us all shivering like crazy

  16. Around here, all outdoor fountains are turned off in the wintertime, which is why I like shopping malls whose fountains are always running! Nothing like the splash of water to bring me peaceful thoughts.

  18. Wow. Not THAT'S cool! The Boy moved here from Florida and he's still convinced this weather is normal for us. But we haven't had this many below freezing days in a row since 1983. At least things warm up for a couple days before it tanks again!

  30. Wow, that's a LOT Of ice! Leaving the water running in the fountain to prevent it freezing seems like a good idea, but it looks like they kept adding water during the cold hours to make that much ice!

  31. Wow! That is crazy cold. We did see a fountain frozen here the other day but our cold is gone until the weekend. It will be back in the teens again. Do you think that is why everyone is getting the flu around here? Our hospitals are full. We don't go around people. LOL!

  32. Aw, this was a really nice post. In idea I would like to put in writing like this additionally – taking time and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means seem to get something done.
