Harker's Island Bridge Replacement
Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation replaced the
Earl C. Davis Memorial Bridge (Bridge No. 73) and Bridge No. 96 –
both of which connect the town of Straits on the mainland to Harker's
Island, with a new structure.
both of which connect the town of Straits on the mainland to Harker's
Island, with a new structure.
The bridges were each more than 50 years old and were due for
replacement. Replacing the bridges provides better access to and
from the island in emergencies and during hurricane evacuations.
The new bridge is primarily made of carbon-fiber and glass-fiber
reinforcement, making it the first structure in the state to use the
material. The material is used to combat corrosion in coastal environments,
which will mean each bridge will require less maintenance.

Enjoyed seeing your coastal bridges. The salty ocean-side environment is harsh on materials and it's good that NCs engineers have taken this into account in their infrastructure projects. I'm all to aware how much more quickly things rust, living close to the North Sea!
ReplyDeleteCheers, Gail.
Lovely photos of the bridges, and of course that blue sky!

ReplyDeleteVery interesting about the construction of the new bridge... and you know I love such things as well as glinting water! YAM xx
to me there is not much in the world more beautiful than the glinting of sunshine on water. traveling the sunshine sky way and going down from the extremely high top with the water spread out all around us is gorgeous. these views remind me of that. they are building new bridge to the beach here, and wow what a mess. it will be great in SEVERAL years when they finish them. not sure what they are using to build it
ReplyDeleteThat is some information about the corrosion resistant bridges. And once again the Brilliant Blue of the sky and the water
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to see the sparkling waters. I do hope the new bridge lives up to expectations.

Love the sparkling water just like many other commenters......like diamonds on the surface!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Pam
We love the warm sunny views of the NC coast.
ReplyDeleteNice photos. XO
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice area down around the bridge on the water in the first photo. I like that bridge, it doesn't feel claustrophobic. Very nice photo of the Harker's Island bridge. Enjoying your perspective.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos and I love that gorgeous blue sky!
ReplyDeleteLady is laughing at the boat launch because she is reminded of an episode of the American office where some of the characters follow GPS instructions to drive down a boat launch . . . she hopes you didn't do that. Lee and Phod who miss blue skies and green
ReplyDeleteI bet there is some fun fishing around there.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love those water views!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to be out on the water, or near it. We have bridges needing replacement, too.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you're getting some nice blue skies where you are. We had a great clear sunny day today too.
