My Friend the wild and Crazy Mad Snapper has been doing a series of post
on Memories. I started thinking about some of the memories I have and thought I'd share them with you...OF COURSE with Madi's permission because she likes it when I
poke fun at myself.
Title: IS THAT BEER I SMELL
Growing up the only alcohol in my house was rubbing alcohol. As I approached my teen years, I heard beer was good for your hair; however, I had no way to find out. Then one hot spring day I came home from school. Some men had been there laying a patio. They left a can of beer on the wall.
I decided what the heck it will be my only opportunity to rinse my hair in beer.
FYI: I used the entire can.... 'cause more is always better RIGHT?
I was a
OH MY WORD THE SMELL WAS HORRID THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH BRECK SHAMPOO IN TOWN TO GET THAT ODOR OUT OF MY Hair or air freshener to disguise the scent in the air. I was waiting at the door when Mama came home. She was a sympathetic listener. Then I had to wait for Daddy to get home. He immediately bellowed is that BEER I smell. Mama tried to explain quickly that I had not been drinking. Finally he let me talk. THEN HE LAUGHED AT ME ASKING IF I LEARNED MY LESSON.
To this day I HATE the smell of beer.
After all that, he called the owner of the company who had been laying the patio to tell them his workers were drinking on the job. I don't have a clue what happened to them.

FYI: You have to be older than dirt to remember this advertisement. I even had the big hair and flipped ends. |

Bwahaahaa! Never heard that one about the beer before.
ReplyDeleteI remember being a Breck Girl. We did not have beer in our house, either.
ReplyDeletehahaha I did that too and then I looked like shockheaded peter, that stuff is very sticky.... and I also stay away from anything beer, even the smell is too much... after my adventure with the leftovers in the glasses of party guests
ReplyDeleteMommy will make sure she never tries a beer shampoo contraption ever. Glad u didnt get punished.
ReplyDeleteGail says: nope, never heard of that one before. I guess here in the UK we are too fond of drinking beer to waste it on our hair!
ReplyDeleteOh that's funny. The things we do for beauty.... Mom once used shea butter on her hair because a magazine article said to.... She needed a salon to fix that mistake.
ReplyDeleteI never did the beer thing to my hair but I did go through the big peroxide phase! Maybe a wine rinse would be better! You make me want to try beer in my hair at 65... maybe it would help my thin fine hair!!! My Mom was always dragging me to the "beauty parlor" for a perm!
ReplyDeleteI bet that did smell really bad. Oh well, a good lesson for you to stay away from beer, period. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteLady remembers hearing that beer was good for your hair but never tried it!
ReplyDeleteOh Mom of Madi!!!! You must haf been very young to use the beer to wash your furs and not to DRINK it!!! If there wuz any beer left overs in this house I would be DRINKING it not washing my furs! (Mum says its a good job I can't open the drinks cabinet or it would be an EMPTY drinks cabinet, hehe)

hahaha, that is a funny story! I hate the smell of beer too.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind beer, but I have never tried it on my hair. They still say it's good for you, so I might give it a go this week. After all, I am on holiday...

I can surely relate to this memory. I would never have been brave enough to use that beer, daddy would not have laughed.. and neither would I.. but I can laugh at YOU and did... was your hair prettier? did it flip better? LOL LOL... once I stood on a chair and got a cigar off the top of the fridge, I was about 13 I think. I took it outside and lit it and took a couple of puffs.. instant sick... never smoked and never drank... we must have led similar lives
ReplyDeleteBOL! I've never tried beer, in my mouth or on my furs. But back when the movie Turner & Hooch came out, Grandma started wondering if dogs really liked beer, so she gave her pug a little beer in a dish. She drank it right up -- then walked into a cabinet!
ReplyDeleteOh no, that is so funny!
ReplyDeleteYou didn't say if your hair was extra glossy with the beer?
I was wondering if your parents thought you had been swigging beer 😄.

Our mom remembers the Breck girl ads and always wished her hair could look like that. You sure had us laughing at this story.
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing, with Brylcreem. Thought if a little dab is all you need, then a lot will make my hair super shiny! My head was a greaseball, and it took days for my hair to NOT look greasy.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I don't think I've ever smelled beer, or the Breck girl!
ReplyDeleteOMD Mom remembers being a Breck Gal... and the Beer Rinses... and Mayonnaise smeared in before washing... and ROLLING Hair on Beer Cans...
ReplyDeleteShe
REMEMBERS all that butt says she never did try any of them.
We are glad that your mom didn't get put on the Mat of Shame fur taking advantage of that big find.
BOL - that was a really funny memory. Mom says her mother liked to put lemon in her hair to keep it blond:) Too bad that doesn't still work. Mom's cousin was a chemist for Breck and created one of their shampoo formulas when she was a young employee.

ReplyDeleteOur mom does love eating her pizza with a mug of cold beer☺
We are reading all of the other comments and we are hysterical, Madi! Thank you☺
ReplyDeleteOMC! That is hysterical! Our dad-guy says that was the waste of a good beer. ;)
ReplyDeleteBOL....Why is Mamas can be so very silly sometimes?? Our Mama put lemon in her hair one summer along with some silly SunIn product..needless to say, it wasn't a pretty sight...but at least it didn't smell like beer, what did she do to finally get the smell out??

That is too funny. :)
ReplyDeleteHilarious Madi!! Don't you wish you could have been there to see that? I do. Your poor Mom. She must have been terrified of what her Dad's reaction was going to be, aye?? He sounds as if he was a VERY NICE Dad. Mum also wants to know what happened to the workers ..... Good on Dad for dobbing them in.
