Things that go beep in the night!!

We religiously change our smoke detector and Carbon Monoxide batteries
every 6 months or a few days earlier with out FAIL.
Even though the very nice batteries we buy are suppose to last a year or longer we still change them.  WHY? WELL because they always go beep in the wee hours of the night. I don't know anyone who has ever had the battery low beep during the day.  If we are just a few days past the 6 month date, it beeps at us. It wasn't quite time to change them before Christmas; however, we did not want them beeping in the wee hours when we had guests staying the night.
I'm sure somewhere in the information that comes with these devices there is very very small
print warning us that they are programmed to go off after 1 am on any given day.
On December 28 (only) I was awakened by the dreaded beeeeeeeeeeeeep at 3 am.
Since it was just one beep, I knew from  where the beeeeeeeeep cometh.  The dag gone battery back up in our home security system.

EXHIBIT 1

Dang it!! I knew the pattern of it's beep was once every few hours as a warning then more frequently.  BUT I drifted in and out of sleep!!
Once the sun was up I checked the file for the customer service number.
Much to my surprise, I saw that the battery was last changed was October 2010 and it was done by the company service tech.  Lo and behold when I called the company I was told the life of a battery was 5 years.  WOW we were living on borrowed time with this battery.
The handy dandy phone lady the told me changing the battery was no longer covered by the monthly AMOUNT we pay.  We'd have to do it ourselves.
Well okey dokey then we'll do it.
After we figured out how to get the cover off the box that was holding the battery hostage, I took a photo if it with T3 (Tracy The (smart) Tracphone) to show the guys at Batteries + Bulbs.   He came back to tell us there are two kinds of batteries. One has smaller connections than the other.  Thanks to T3 the Battery guru was able to consult with GiGi Google.  He sent us home with the Battery with smaller connections.
It connects just like a car battery so easy peasy. DONE and a big hot pink note is
on the box reminding us to do it again BEFORE December 2023.
Handy Dandy phone lady did most of the talking.  She gave me some
very helpful info.  Should the beep go off in the wee hours in 5 years I should hit cancel twice.  That will keep it from going off for 12 hours.

If you battery low beep on your detectors goes off ONLY in the wee hours of the night
raise your ✋.

These are a few out of doors photos I took at Cedar Creek Gallery

We had a very heavy frost here at the house January 16, the morning of our road trip.

As you walk toward the entrance of Cedar Creek Gallery there are so many
things to see.  Such as the blown glass Fairy Balls.

  2. I agree, those batteries only beep in the night! I think there must be a battery conspiracy to make sure they are changed right away.
    The Fairy balls are pretty.

  5. My neighbour and I have connected smoke alarms and I think that she sometimes cooks in the middle of the night and the alarms go off at 2am! Just as I am in the middle of a lovely proper sleep! Sooooo annoying.

Those glass balls are beautiful by the way.

Brava Brava Ms C - that was a perfect FFF offering!!! it had a 'catch' (what was going to happen?), it had drama (would there or would there not be a battery?) and it had a fine conclusion with a message in the tale!!!

Today instead of whiet stuff and frost, we have sun, wind and 10'C (50'F). Crazy weather. YAM xx

  9. I will comment on the most important thing first. LOVE the fairy balls, truly do!!! about the beep, we don't have batteries we have it wired in, which is not good, but I can tell you that the 5 times it has beeped it is always after we go to bed. that is one good battery that lasted that long... I enjoyed your story of the beep in the night, very much in fact and also your story was a learning event and added to my knowledge of things I need to know. glad you found humans and techies to help

  10. You're right those batteries always giving up the ghost in the wee hours of the night. Always. Too many times to count.

Love all the nature shots, especially the fairy balls. Those are awesome.

  11. Years ago, we stayed at a friend's cabin, and in lieu of an alarm clock, we used her cell phone. Well, it's battery went low, and started beeping in the wee hours! Bummer...

  12. We never heard of fairy balls before. They're very pretty.

A couple years ago, a family moved in to the house across the street from us. They were from Nepal, and didn't speak English very well yet. One day, the smoke detector started beeping in their house. We could hear it every time we went outside. It went on for days, and they probably had no idea what it was. So finally Dad went over there and told them to change the batteries on it. They were so happy to finally get rid of that annoying beep!

  13. The fairy balls are just gorgeous! Landlord Bob had the detectors here wired electrically so we never need to change batteries but we do have to change batteries in the thermostat.

  14. Batteries ALWAYS seem to do that in the middle of the night!! Glad you could fix yours easily! Mom had to do that with the battery in her battery back up!!!

  18. Such gorgeous blown glass. Our smoke detector is electric. It's nice because we don't have to remember to change the batteries!

  19. I just adore those Fairy Balls and such lovely frosty forest color!

Why is it fire alarm and security system batteries always pick the wee hours to beepity beep?!

  20. We love your story and agree it always seems those things go off in the middle of the night and scare the crap out of the pups too.

  21. Mom and Dad have both hands raised and we have 12 paws up - yep, middle of the night is always when the smoke detectors batteries decide to die - NEVER fails. And then Mom has to get out the big ladder and climb up to the high ceilings and change those darn beepers. And then she has to let US out because we think it is morning time:)

Mom loves those fairy balls - so delicate and pretty.

  22. Ma has her hand raised!!!!! WHY OH WHY??! I thinks it's a tree rat conspiracy! They come in down the chimney, and push that test button thingie just to annoy us! They knows that annoys us puppers the most! friggin' tree rats.....
Anyhu, loves the Fairy Balls! (btw, Ma thought it was fairy's balls, which didn't make sense because fairies are gurls ☺)

  23. We have had to change some of the batteries in ours since we moved. There is one in every room so when they start running low, it sounds like we have crickets. LOL!

  24. I really love the balls in the last photo.

Yes, our security system has a battery almost identical to that one.
