Wordy Wednesday: Buttons

My Dutch friend Mara of Weighty Matters  is very crafty.
Last Saturday Mara posted about her love of yarns and her mom's love of threads..it reminded My mind's eye about my very own obsession

B U T  T O N S

I replied:
I salivate over buttons!! I just love them..they can turn a mundane outfit into a fashion statement.
Today I add this:
I have been known to buy new buttons to put on a store bought garment to kick it up a notch.

Now for a lookie at my collection...

This antique tin and the contents belonged to my
mother-in-law..over the years I have used some of the decorative buttons out of it.  Most of the white buttons of men's shirts. I love this tin and have often wondered about it's history.
By the time I discovered the tin her in sewing box, she had passed.

Now for my collection.  95% of them came off newly purchased
items from The Limited (they always had extra buttons).
My daughter worked at The Limited when she was in high school
The (only) perk of working  there was a decent discount on clothing.
I was going to empty all the zip lock bags but
that would have been proof positive that I am obsessed.
Back in the day when Piece Goods Fabric was till in business,
I routinely shopped there and always bought novelty buttons on sale.  I have lots of animal buttons...I'm sure that is not a surprise.

  1. we have lots of boxes with buttons too... if they really want to expand the lockdown, we could sort them all ... it would need some days LOL

  2. Gail's rarely used sewing box also contains a tin of buttons inherited from her Granny (the tin not the buttons). It must be well over 50 years old.

  7. Hmmm, I see a lot of buttons in your future! My Mom had a fairly large sewing box with two levels. I always loved to go through it. After she passed away it went with us wherever we moved. I still enjoyed going through it even more. She had a good amount of buttons. I didn't know you had such a big passion for buttons!

  8. the only buttons in my house are the ones that come on garments, the extras, I throw them I their bags into the sewing basket, which is where I have a few needles and thread for sewing button back on that fall off. the thing is, since I retired, I don't wear anything that has buttons, I think I have 2 shirts that have buttons but I rarely wear them. that tin of buttons might be worth a fortune today or in the future. mother had a lot of buttons, but then she had a lot of shells and egg cartons. ha ha

  9. Love your button collection. I have jars and jars that I bought at a garage sale. They are plain, but different colors.

I also love buttons. I have used them in mosaic's before

  10. This post sure brings back memories. My mother had a large mason jar to keep her buttons in. I so remember that jar. She loved buttons too.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

  12. I have a large box with little compartments where I sorted all my buttons. It was driving me crazy to try to find a button I wanted with them all in a big pile like yours are. That box sure looks like a treasure trove of buttons.

  13. Grandma Elsie had a big container full of buttons. In her time, you never threw anything away. Old worn out shirts were stripped of their buttons and used as rags. It seems these days, clothing gets donated rather than worn out.

  15. When we moved into this house, The Hubby's father was still living here. After his death, we purchased the whole kit and kaboodle, and years later I discovered his mother's stash of buttons. It was a wonderful moment; like a link between her and I, since I do all the sewing, mending around here. Buttons are fascinating!

  20. I love buttons too BUT I'm not "obsessed" by them like SOME PEOPLE I KNOW! But buttons are interesting - especially "different" ones....I am guilty however if standing in front of the button rack at JoAnne's and looking at all the FUN buttons. I just look though - if I sewed I'd buy them and I DO think that quilts are a fun way to use some of your collection!!

    Hugs, Pam

  21. Mom has a tin of buttons too. When she lived in Massachusetts, there was a shop called the Trim Exchange. It had aisles filled with boxes of every kind of button you could want. It is closed now, but Mom remembers shopping there a lot.

    Happy Wednesday.

  23. I love buttons too. I have made some cat art with them. Mine were bought at the craft store for that purpose though, not from a cool collection like these. XO

  27. You are obsessed but what's wrong with that? We have many obsessions but none as pretty as your buttons!

  28. Hey, I thinks that's a pretty cool obsession! Better that than bugs! Ma knew some kid that used to collect bugs...yuck. Anyhu, that really is a cool tin!
