One of my absolutely most yummy youthful memories is making bananas splits with my Daddy, who by the way was King of anything banana. I don't have any photos except in My Mind's Eye. I borrowed a photo from the internet. It is very close to the one's I remember
Bananas used were just bought that day. Skin was nice and yellow w/o any hint of bruising.
We had every known topping for a perfect banana split with a cherry on top. Candied nuts and cherries, all kinds of ice cream, runny strawberry topping, Reddi-wip cream in the can, chocolate sauce warmed just enough to make it run down into all the crooks and crannies of the gastronomical dessert.
Of course we had to squirt a generous portion in our mouths several times.
Daddy also had his own way of making a banana sandwich. Most folks would put mayo on white bread, slice the banana and call it done.
Daddy said the bananas fell out making a mess. He would slice all the banana in large pieces in to a bowl. Add mayo to them and mash with a folk. Once the consistency was perfect, he spread it on the bread. Magically you had a banana sandwich that was not messy.
oooh count us in... we loved the one from an italian cafe... it was called banana boat because it was served in a gondola...
ReplyDeleteOh but that banana split looks so yummy! My brother and I were discussing stuff that mom made when we were little and not all of it was very healthy but it was sure yummy! Mom love making Junket from those rennet tables. I had to check Amazon just to see and you can still buy them today. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteI love banana splits but haven't had one in years. My Dad had a bowl of ice cream every night. My favorite ice cream memory was eating a scoop of chocolate ice cream topped with marshmallow goo in a frosted metal dish at the dime store lunch counter with my Mom. Later with my gal pals on Saturday afternoons. I have never heard of banana and mayo on white bread. Sweet that you have this memory of one of your favorite foods... I Scream with your Dad! You made me smile this morning with this one and brought back some sweet memories for me!

ReplyDelete....OMG.... you did nanarmayo sangers??? Back in Nigeria days, my brother asked the houseboy to make him banana sandwiches for lunch and mayonnaise ones (he liked just mayo on bread)... Emmanuel, missunderstood and combined the bananas with the mayo and we had what we thought was an original, Mac Clan only invention!!! Works best with slightly green nanars of course - but oh yeahhhhhh.... YAM xx

ReplyDeleteThis banana sandwich we have never heard of...maybe its cause we're western Canadians. We are going shopping and a banana is on the list. I must have a mashed banana sandwich.

my banana sandwich was and is always with peanut butter. i have on occasion had mayo on one but not smashed together, but how could it not taste good.. we used to get one just like this one for ONE dollarm but that was in 1960

ReplyDeleteMom remembers banana splits from Friendly's when she lived in New England. Sadly no Friendly's west of Ohio:( But she does visit a Friendly's whenever she visits on the East coast. As for bananas, she only eats bananas as whole bananas, never in muffins, or cereal, pudding, or anything like that. And they have to be just yellow, no spots, no bruising. Sheesh, she is fussy:)

ReplyDeleteI hated mayo as a kid, so I can tell you I never had or heard of a banana mayo sandwich until I married the hubby.
OH BOY!!!!! Now I want a banana split in the WORST way! Never had a banana sandwich though.....may have to try that one of these days.

I loved banana splits made just that way! Runny stuffs seeping down and in. Nuts, and gotta have more than one cherry! I haven't had one in years! I haven't tried the banana and mayo taste...mine has always been a spread of peanut butter with banana slices on top. Yer killing' me here!
ReplyDeleteOooo Dad says that they were the BEST. We had a diner with 16 different ice cream flavors in the big tubs with the scoop. When Dad was 13 he made a 22 scoop sunday MOL
