Thoroughly Poetic Thursday#107

Today is Poetic Thursday hosted by our pals Teddy and Angel Sammy

Here is today's inspiration

This probably doesn't qualify as a poem..

Just things My Mind's Eye remembers.

Back in the late 1950's early 1960's
My parents and I went
to the drive in theater most weekends.
This picture gave my mind's eye many images.
There was a playground in front of the big screen with all kinds of fun awaiting just like below.

I have images and feelings that I'll share.

Warm nights
Cars in rows on our left and right
Speakers attached to the car windows
The entire night was a delight
Before the movie we went to the
Snack bar  there were so many choices
candy, soft drinks, popcorn, hot dogs
and soft swirl Ice Cream.
Deciding was hard

There were cartoons before the movies
There were always two movie features.
One for children was shown first and one for the adults was last.  Most children were asleep in the back seat. My mom always had a pillow and blanket
And I always fell asleep.

  1. A drive in movie theatre always sounded impossibly glamorous to us in the UK, where no such thing existed. Then I was taken to one in Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1989. It was very run down . Weeds growing through the paved parking area, and the projection equipment broke down so we never got to see the film after all. Still, happy memories!
    Cheers, Gail.

  2. that was a time machine poem... if we close our eyes we can see all the things you described... and we can hear the kids, the laughter and the screaming and the sound of the cars... and there is the smell of popcorn in the air... real popcorn not the thingies for microwave...

  5. I never went to the drive-in with my family - only friends when I got older.

  6. As a young kid I enjoyed the drive-in. It was pretty much all about the food and the playground. As a young teen we hung out there for a movie and mostly talked and laughed the night away. I think we were a nuisance occasionally. Dates were always interesting there. You do bring back the memories!

  7. Today, drive-in theaters would probably be a haven for mass shootings. How sad our world has become.

    Popcorn, coke, and Jr. Mints!!!

  8. What lovely memories of childhood! I don't think I ever went to a drive-in movie...I don't think the small and isolated rural town I grew up in had one.

When I first arrived in Sydney, there were open air movie parks... and I went couple of times; great fun! They didn't last long after that though; too much competition from the rise of multiplex cinemas - and the arrival of the video machine! YAM xx

  10. What great memories you bring to life with your poem. Our mom remembers going to drive-ins as a girl with the family, too.

  11. What a wonderful poem!! YES your memories are like MY memories - times have changed but some of those old memories feel fresh as yesterday. The drive-in was a treat and those little playgrounds were always there to keep the kids from bugging the adults. LOL Thanks for playing poetry with us and thanks for the memories...............

  14. We use to go to the drive-in theatre lots, we had four in the town where we grew up. Hey, I had that exact ride on my school playground.

  16. My gosh, what memories you inspired. I had the same experience and still went to them even after I was married...we did that for several years and just sorta stopped. Not sure why. I remember the playground...the movies, the speakers..all the cars. People parked right next to you with their windows down of course, and your hearing hem, and they, you while you say there for several hours. Never bothered anyone. Just expected. The trips to the snack bar. I can still hear in my mind the jingle played on the screen to get you to go to the snack bar.

  17. I don't think we ever went to a drive-in movie as a kid. My Dad always had to go to work at the Post Office so early in the morning that he was usually alsleep by 8pm. But we did a lot of other fun things, though.
