Nature, Final Feature and Feline Friday

Our hosts for Nature Friday  LLB Gang

At 8pm Saturday, January 24, a bit of snow and sleet started to fall. This is not snow.   About 11 pm it turned in to all it is a combination of freezing rain and sleet

As you saw on yesterday's post, we had a sleet/freezing rain/and a wee bit of snow event earlier this week.  In case of a power outage, we had plenty of blankets and gas logs to stay warm; however, I was very concerned about NO coffee. I bought a TAL ranger pro thermos.
The info stated, it would keep hot beverage hot for 14 hours.  WooHoo I ran hot water thru my coffee maker at 12 noon on Friday at 10 pm Friday night it was still HOT.   My idea was to make coffee on Saturday night so we would have hot beverage on Sunday. BUT as the saying goes 'the best laid plans of mice and (wo)men always come to no good end'. At 10 pm Saturday night I warmed up the thermos with hot water.   I made coffee, added it to the thermos at 10:30pm.  When we got up at 6 am 7 1/2 hours later.  The coffee was barely warm...so I asked Gigi Google about this.

Short answer is:

Water stays hotter than coffee in a thermos primarily due to a smaller temperature difference between the hot water and the ambient air, resulting in slower heat loss. Coffee is often served hotter and cools faster because heat loss, through conduction and radiation, is proportional to the difference in temperature, meaning the hotter liquid (coffee) loses heat more rapidly to the environment and oils in coffee make it cool faster.

Longer more scientific answers are at the end of the post.

Flashback January 29, 2010

In observance of Puzzle Day.....which is Friday, January 29th.
Mom and I have a math puzzle for you all to work out

x+y=1bc

January 30, 2010

The answer to yesterday's puzzle

Madi and I add a disclaimer here since neither of us are mathematically inclined!!
is below.
x(Mom) + y(Dad)=bc(1 busy cat)
GOTTCHA!!!
MOL LOL BOL AND LOLTIME (laughing out loud tears in my eyes)

Longer answer to why water stays hotter than coffee in a thermos

Reasons for Temperature Differences:
  • Temperature Difference (Delta T): Hotter liquids, like coffee, have a larger temperature difference with the surrounding air compared to warm water. According to thermodynamic principles, a higher temperature difference leads to a faster rate of heat transfer.
  • Initial Temperature and Thermal Mass: Coffee is typically brewed and poured at a higher temperature than water for tea or other uses, causing it to lose more energy over time.
  • Thermal Conductivity and Insulation: While a thermos uses a vacuum layer to minimize conduction and convection, and reflective, silvered surfaces to reduce radiation, no insulation is perfect. The higher the temperature of the liquid, the faster the heat will eventually pass through this insulation.

The lovely young woman looking at me
was a shining light in her prime.
If we could speak, the tales
we would share.
I'd tell her to enjoy each moment in time,
not to rush the precious hours of her youth.
Time passes quickly, memories and the journey along the way

IMPAWTANT BREAKING NEWS FROM

my nephews, Kat and Rocky and Niece Cali  and their staff.  We have been without power since Saturday.  Our County was most badly affected in Georgia.  At the Peak of the storm 84% of the county was w/o power.  That has been reduced to 58%.  We live down a dead end dirt road and are on the bottom of the list for power to be restored.  We order a Generac Generator before Christmas but it's not scheduled to be installed til mid February...😟" We gave a wood burning stove that we are all gathered around.

Sending warm hugs and love and we miss you all

Mom says to tell you all that we 3 furry friends are oblivious to any problems.. normal for cat right?

Below is another fountain in the Gardens at WRAL it too froze in motion.

This is one monster icicle

As of 6pm on Saturday 1/8/18 Raleigh had over 180 consecutive hours of temperatures below freezing and many days only 20 degrees and some nights in the single digits...VERY x 87 million unusual for us.  WRAL TV has a fountain in front of the tv station.
To keep the water pipes from busting they have to leave the fountain running or drain it completely.
Over the years it has become a very popular place to take winter photos.
This one was taken 1/6/18
We are tickled pink to say our high yesterday was a balmy 46 tropical degrees

Nature and Feline Friday Flashbacks

Our hosts for Nature Friday  LLB Gang

Photo taken on January 16....OMCs/OMDs our daffodils buds are about to open.  Years ago we had over 200 bulbs planted.

Our Rock Garden receives about 4 hours of sun starting at 11am in the winter.  And I might add out of 200 these are the ones that still flower. All the others just sprout greenery.

Madi shares Secrets for Proper grooming:

1. Always be sure to wash your back thoroughly to control the build up of human cooties.

2. Remember the toes should be clean one at a time and stretch that leg out to tone your thighs

3. Don't forget to wash both sides of your face, behind your ears and
Remember to clean the corners of your eyes.

4. When cleaning your chin remember to hold your head back to stretch the neck
muscles otherwise you'll be doing 'double duty'. (MOL)

5. Most importantly get lots of beauty sleep in spite of the
horrid flashy beast.

Thanks for dropping by.

Thoroughly Thankful and Poetic Thursday# 246

Today is Poetic Thursday hosted by our pals Teddy and Angel Sammy at

This week's photo challenge which is also my thankful

A true story:

1967 I was a senior in high school
To quote Rizzo from the Pink Ladies in Grease

We are seniors and we are gonna rule the school.

Prom Committee, our advisor was my all time favorite teacher
Miss Kilby, Home Economics and my homeroom teacher.

She needed volunteers...of course I raised my hand.
A bit too quickly it seems, she wanted at least two sets of parents to volunteer for Prom Chaperones.
WHAT the heck my parents were going to my
PROM!!! So not cool.
The Parent volunteers were all teens in the late 1930's the only activities
were dancing. This prom went on record as the best prom in 5 years.
The chaperones turned into dance teachers.
They taught us all how to Jitterbug we taught them how to do the Twist.
Oh do I wish there had been pictures.  The dance floor was hopping.
I was so very THANKFUL to have such cool, fun parents. I knew they loved to dance but had never actually witnessed such fancy foot work.

Side Note:
My daddy was an electrical contractor.  He volunteered to do all the electrical work for the special prom lights. It looked like a thousand tiny stars overhead.
It was just too COOL
how they transformed the
SCHOOL GYM

Wordless Wednesday: Cali

We thank our Hostess Sandee at

 Comedy Plus

Dear Auntie HiC,

Mom left the closet door ajar, and I sprang into action!

I guess I should have thought this through before I made that leap.

I leaped (leapt if you’re British) from the floor onto the top of the chest of drawers, and somehow, I managed to only knock off a small bowl of coins!

Before I realized it, I had climbed all the way to the top shelf of the closet! Yikes!

Of course, the noise sent Mom running, and I must admit, I was relieved she rescued me! She said she hoped that I learned a lesson from this incident. What do you think?😹

❤️ Cali   (or as Mom calls me, “Little Stinker”)

Dearest Cali

Auntie HiC is clapping with glee and jubilation

1.  What a great jump

2. Auntie HiC thinks everything you do is delightful and fun

3. I think every girl should leap at every chance she gets.

I think I shall now call you Cali Queen of Calisthenics

Happy Tuesday: Fun facts with Rocky

We thank our Hostess Sandee at Comedy Plus

Rocky not only are you kind, adorable and handsome
You have just solved the 300 million year old question
what/who comes first egg or chicken
Lovingly Auntie HiC

Yesterday several of you mentioned that you thought the name 'Sanitary Fish Market (FYI it is also a restaurant)' was rather odd.
As a child, it was my families favorite Seafood Restaurant.  Here is some info on why it was named Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant

The Sanitary Fish Market & Restaurant in Morehead City, NC, got its name because founders Tony Seamon and Ted Garner wanted to signal its cleanliness, a contrast to typical messy fish markets, and because the building's owner required they keep it neat and not sell alcohol, ensuring a family-friendly, "sanitary" environment.
Details of the Name's Origin
  • Cleanliness Promise: In 1938, when they opened there were 12 stools.  Most fish markets were considered dirty; Seamon and Garner chose the name to assure customers of their commitment to hygiene and a wholesome atmosphere.
  • Building Owner's Rules: The owner of the rented space, Charles Wallace, stipulated that no beer or wine be sold and the premises remain clean, reinforcing the "Sanitary" theme.
  • Family-Friendly: The name was a deliberate marketing choice to attract families, distinguishing them from other establishments and projecting compliance with the owner's strict rules.
