Serene Sunday

Field of yellow day lilies along I40 on the way home from our mini vacation in Mid June
Many years ago, NC, Started a highway beautification project.  Fields of wildflowers and lilies are scattered on the interstates. Usually in open fields near on and off ramps.  I fear the fields are slowly disappearing due to the need for bigger and better roads.  Now we see more fields of the orange and white construction barrels.

A small section of Jordan Lake.  Photo also taken on our way home from our mini vacation in Mid June:
Here are a few facts about Jordan Lake which is about 40 miles from our home

B. Everett Jordan Lake is a reservoir in New Hope Valley, west of Cary and south of Durham in Chatham CountyNorth Carolina, in the United States; the northernmost end of the lake extends into southwestern Durham County.

Part of the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area,[1] the reservoir covers 13,940 acres (5,640 ha) with a shoreline of 180 miles (290 km) at its standard water level of 216 feet (66 m) above sea level. It was developed as part of a flood control project prompted by a particularly damaging tropical storm that hit the region downstream in September 1945. Constructed at an original cost of US $146,300,000, it is owned and operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which dammed and flooded the Haw River and New Hope River between 1973 and 1983.

  1. The lake looks lovely. I was wondering why the Day Lilies would have been grown en masse. Mr. Google couldn't help me out but said they can have a mild laxative or pain relief effect, but are not grown medicinally or for their oil. Of course they are also poisonous to cats and dogs like most lilies.

  10. Sometimes these lakes built as flood control measures can be most attractive as well as providing useful leisure amenities - especially welcome in hot weather. . There were many such lakes in the area of Oklahoma where I lived, and I spent many happy days enjoying watersports on them.
Today, enjoyed in a swim in the river Dee in Scotland - water not quite so warm as Copan or Birch Lakes in NE Oklahoma!
    Cheers, Gail.
