Today I'm thankful my (long) 6 week wait is over.
Early January I noticed a wee red bump on my right leg near my knee. I am thankful my dermatologist was very proactive. She did a biopsy. Results came back a squamous cell skin cancer. I just had my annual exam by her in October. It was not there. Today at 7:15 am I'm have MOHs surgery at Cary Skin Clinic. The area is still quite small (about the size of the end of my index finger) so my hope is the procedure won't take the entire 4 hours of my appointment. I will have a post up on Feline and Nature Friday, March 15 and I hope to give you an update.
My amateur advice is to quickly act on any odd or unusual bump on your body. I have never had any form of skin cancer.
If you aren't familiar with MOHs, here is a short description.
Mohs surgery is a method for treating skin cancer lesions. During this procedure, the surgeon removes thin layers of skin one layer at a time and examines each layer under a microscope to determine if any cancer remains. This procedure continues until only cancer-free tissue remains.
I hope your surgery goes well! Sending love and purrs!

ReplyDeletePurrs and prayers for you today.
ReplyDeletehaving had 2 MOH's myself and watched bob have 3, I know you will be fine. really not much to it but killing time. one of mine I had to stay 4 hours, he other was about 45 minutes. bob's were all three one cut and done. hope yours is too. we have both had several squamous carcinomas removed, that did not need MOHS. they are common in people who spent to much time baking themselves in the sun. both of us are guilty and living proof sun does cause skin cancer . glad you caught it early.
ReplyDeleteDearest Cecilia,
ReplyDeleteTrusting the removal went fine and looking forward to your update!
Hugs,
Mariette

There's nothing like preventive medicine and early detection, which you and your doctor are on top of. I'm praying the procedure went well and you are home and recovering by now.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you caught it early. I have had two such operations and once it was gone it was gone.
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful that YOU were proactive and went to your dermatologist again!
