Yesterday several of you mentioned that you thought the name 'Sanitary Fish Market (FYI it is also a restaurant)' was rather odd.
As a child, it was my families favorite Seafood Restaurant.  Here is some info on why it was named Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant

The Sanitary Fish Market & Restaurant in Morehead City, NC, got its name because founders Tony Seamon and Ted Garner wanted to signal its cleanliness, a contrast to typical messy fish markets, and because the building's owner required they keep it neat and not sell alcohol, ensuring a family-friendly, "sanitary" environment.
Details of the Name's Origin
  • Cleanliness Promise: In 1938, when they opened there were 12 stools.  Most fish markets were considered dirty; Seamon and Garner chose the name to assure customers of their commitment to hygiene and a wholesome atmosphere.
  • Building Owner's Rules: The owner of the rented space, Charles Wallace, stipulated that no beer or wine be sold and the premises remain clean, reinforcing the "Sanitary" theme.
  • Family-Friendly: The name was a deliberate marketing choice to attract families, distinguishing them from other establishments and projecting compliance with the owner's strict rules.

  1. I would say Mr. Seamon & Mr. Garner were marketing geniuses to advertise their place of business as “sanitary”! 😉 Congrats Indiana Hoosiers on winning the CFB National Championship!!!

  5. Thank you for explaining that the egg came long before the chicken, Rocky. Now when someone asks that age old question I will be able to tell them.

  6. Thanks for the explanation! Yes, it was a good marketing strategy at the time. Don't think I'd have wanted to be in an UNsanitary fish market!

Rocky, you have, indeed, solved an age-old question! Eggs first!
