flag on the wall near our booth.
I don't recall ever knowing much about the flag
This is Australia's flag and a brief explanation of the meaning.
Adopted in 1901, the Australian flag represents the nation's British heritage, federal structure, and Southern Hemisphere location. It features the Union Jack (British history), the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star (six states and territories), and the Southern Cross constellation (geographic location) on a blue field.
Key Elements and Meanings:
- Union Jack (Top Left): Acknowledges Australia’s history as a British colony and its continuing connection to the United Kingdom.
- Commonwealth Star (Bottom Left): Also known as the Federation Star, it has seven points representing the six states and the territories. It symbolizes the unity of the federation.
- Southern Cross (Right Side): A prominent constellation visible in the Southern Hemisphere, representing Australia's geographic location. The stars represent the five moral virtues (justice, prudence, temperance, fortitude) ascribed by Dante, as intended by the original designers.
- Color Palette: Blue, white, and red.

ReplyDeleteOZ has six states: Qld, NSW, Vic, SA, WA, and Tas, and two territories: ACT and NT... at the development of the flag, the Australian Capital Territory (pretty much only Canberra and a few farm/settlements around it) didn't formally exist as a separate entity - that only happened in 1989! The Commonwealth star only had six points for the states when created in 1901... but then the Northern Territory was accepted as being part of the nation, so the seventh point was added (and is now considered to represent both territories).
The term Union Jack is very often applied to the United Kingdom flag, but that is actually only correctly supposed to be applied to the flag flown by ships (specifically the navy). It is otherwise properly called the Union Flag.

ReplyDeleteFun to learn new facts about places isn't it. And you get to do it from the comfort and the fun of your own neighborhood. By the way you're awful optimistic with that new springtime header. I'm still looking at Frozen snow and actually yesterday and today we are completely fogged in to the point of being dangerous outside.
ReplyDeleteAustralia and New Zealand are far away and keep to themselves, which is probably a good thing for them. Most of the world never hears much about them.
