For FFF today
I have a few more short stories about the wonderful international professors/post docs and grad students at NCSU who made going to work joyful every day.

1. Willie was  visiting post doctoral fellow, from Germany

Willie was quiet, reserved, BUT he had a dry wit that appeared at random any time.
He shared a lab with Morgan,  Physics grad student from Florida.
One morning, without cracking a smile,
Willie walked into the lab
and loudly said
Good Morgen, Morgan
...for a nanosecond (physics speak)
the lab was silent then it broke out in uncontrollable laughter.
(for those who might not know Morgen is Morning in German)
Willie went back to Germany after a year. Morgan is a Physics and Material Science Professor in Arkansas.

2. Jung was a delightful physics grad student from Korea.
He had the most hilarious habit.
It didn't matter if he had a question, wanted to say hi
Each time he came to my office no matter the reason the first thing out of his mouth was

"You Know What"
I always replied "What".
It was so endearing and special. After Jung received his PhD, he returned to Korea

Nature

Recently I sent this email* and photo to Kit of a really odd and scary bug.
It was sitting on our back porch near the trash cans.

*Kit
Can you ID this bug

Enlarge bit has an evil looking mouth 2nd picture shows the front

This is the face close to his mouth it looked as if he had crab claws.

Once a teacher always a teacher.   Kit embraced the challenge for a Teaching moment.

I am very thankful Mr. Cannibal Fly did not decide to get as up close and personal with me as I did with him.

This is the back

She quickly replied:
I could it be a red-footed cannibalfly with this information

We decided it was the cannibal fly.

Promachus rufipes, commonly known as the red-footed cannibalfly or bee panther, is a large species of robber fly in the family Asilidae. [1]
Key Facts
  • Size: Adults measure about 28 mm to 35 mm (1.10 to 1.37 inches) long, making them quite large for flies. [1]
  • Interaction with Humans: They do not hunt humans and do not sting, but they can deliver a painful bite if handled or accidentally crushed. If one lands on you, it is best to gently brush it away rather than slap it. [1, 2]

  7. Mom makes word games out of German words a lot. It's nice to know that some of your students are successful with their degrees and that they took them back to their home countries.
