THE CONVICT: A NEIGHBORHOOD STORY

KITTIES, PUPPIES AND TWO LEGGERS WHEN MOM
TOLD ME THIS STORY I FELL OVER ON MY BACK AND MOL

THIS STORY IS B.M. (no not that bm) B(efore) M(adi).

TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO WHEN THE PEEPS MOVED
INTO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD MY HUMAN SIS WAS TWELVE.  NEARLY EVERY HOUSE
HAD ONE OR MORE MUNCHKINS UNDER FIFTEEN YEARS OLD AND ALL THE ADULTS WERE IN THEIR LATE 30'S EXCEPT FOR THE FOLKS WHO LIVED IN THE HOUSE PICTURED BELOW.  DURING THE SUMMER, SIS MET THE MUNCHKINS IN THE 'HOOD, THEY ALL HAD A STORY TO TELL HER ABOUT THIS HOUSE.  THE MAN IN THE HOUSE WAS RARELY SEEN OUTSIDE; HOWEVER, WHEN HE WAS SEEN
HE WAS REPORTED TO BE BEARDED, WITH MESSY HAIR AND CLOTHES,
HE SHUFFLED ABOUT AND THEY WERE SURE HE HAD CHAINS AROUND HIS ANKLES, WHICH IS HOW THE CONVICT STORY BEGAN.

SHORTLY BEFORE SCHOOL STARTED IN THE FALL, SIS AND MOM WERE WALKING BY THIS HOUSE TO FIND HER DESIGNATED BUS STOP. SIS TOLD MOM ALL THE MUNCHKINS TOLD HER A CONVICT LIVED IN THIS HOUSE.  THEY CONVINCED HER THE ONLY SAFE WAY TO PASS THIS HOUSE SAFELY WAS TO RUN LIKE THE WIND.
MOM SAID MY SIS WAS WORRIED ABOUT RUNNING WITH ALL HER BOOKS.
THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF SCHOOL SIS HAD TO PASS THIS HOUSE EVERY AFTERNOON ALL ALONE.  SOME HOW SHE SURVIVED AND NEVER SAW THE CONVICT.  FORTUNATELY, FOR HER SOME OTHER MUNCHKINS WHO LIVED NEAR US STARTED TAKING THE AFTERNOON BUS.  THEY WALKED BY THIS SCARY HOUSE
IN A TIGHT UNIT!!

A FEW MONTHS LATER, WE LEARNED THE TRUE IDENTITY OF

THE FOLKS IN THIS HOUSE. THEY WERE RETIRED AND IN THEIR LATE 60'S.  THE MAN WAS BEARDED, HE SHUFFLED, DUE TO AGE.  HE DID NOT HAVE CHAINS AROUND HIS ANKLES.  HIS CLOTHES WEREN'T MESSY; HOWEVER,  THEY WERE NOT THE KIND OF CLOTHES THE KIDS WERE USED TO SEEING. WE LATER LEAREND THEY MOVED TO RALEIGH FROM ATLANTA TO BE NEAR THEIR CHILDREN.  MOM WOULD SAY HELLO TO THE MAN BUT NEVER SAW HIS WIFE OUTSIDE.

ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO THE ELDERLY COUPLE MOVED INTO AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY.  IT IS NOW OCCUPIED BY A YOUNG COUPLE WHO COMLETELY REMODELED IT.  I WONDER IF THEY KNOW THE HOUSE WAS ONCED OWNED BY A 'CONVICT'?

TO THIS DAY, THE ONLY CONVICTS WE KNOW IN THE 'HOOD ARE THESE TWO TREES
WHO HAVE BEEN CHAINED TO ONE ANOTHER FOR SOMETIME......
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY STORIES ABOUT YOU NEIGHBORHOOD?

  13. Scary story for Halloween....

We just moved into our new neighborhood in late May, but the guy that used to live in our condo had a cat and when he moved out he left the cat here to survive on his own :( very sad. the guys mother comes 3 times a day like clock work to feed the cat, but refuses to take the cat home with her. she thinks the cat would not survive if she moved him to a new place. she comes at 7:30am, 11:30am and 4:30pm everyday rain or shine. She talks to him and plays with him for about 30 min. every time.

  14. Ohhhhhh....I don't blame sis for running! Those trees much have been very bad to have been chained up for so long.

Thanks so much C for your support on my blog. Love you!!!!

  15. That's a really cool story - we bet your human sister could run like the wind past that house. Wouldn't you love to know the story behind that man?

Madi - we think you have a great scary face for Halloween there.

  18. I was thinking that was a pretty fantastic house for convicts - LOL!!!

It's pretty funny how some people in their late 60's are ANCIENT to children :-)

  19. A creepy old woman named Ms. Belle watched from inside whenever we walked across the bridge (public highway) next to her house. She would often run out holding a broom above her head and tell us that she owned the bridge and no children were allowed. We had no doubt...she must have been a witch.

Now, dear Madi...I regret to inform you that most of us in our 60s do not, in fact, shuffle as we walk.

  20. That was a well told story for sure and just perfect for Halloween. Kind a scary especially for the young bean. I would have been scared to death to walk by that house. We have lots of stories about our neighborhood but they aren't meant for young kitties's ears.

When our Mom was growing up the "nicest" house in the neighborhood belonged to this crotchedly old man. Once when our baseball when into his yard he kept it and then went to all of our parents and complained. My Mom Dad's told him to shove it how silly he was being we were only kids playing ball in the street.

  23. Great story! I bet your sis looks back on that time fondly. I think it's fun as kids to scare ourselves with our imagination. Madi, I love the shot of you MOL'ing! I'm laughing because by the description, I was expecting them to be really old, not in their 60's. I hope the couple are doing okay. Love the convict trees!

  27. Those trees must have committed a really serious crime to be all chained up like that.

We've only been in this neighborhood a few years. In this hood (like Katnip Lounge) the character is probably our Mom, the crazy cat lady.

  28. Oh ya....it's not really a funny one...but it's something to think about. In Tucson....the neighbors across the stree ---you'd see them come and go, but never to have the garage door open for just the fleeting time to remove the vehicle. They ALWAYS bought a NEW one, each year. Well, not to say anything against a certain group of people, they did not speak English, but only Spanish. And always seemed to have family members show up at all hours of the night. Only to quickly shut the garage door down again. One time on the local news Bud heard about a family tunneling to Old Mexico [which was just 50 miles away from our home] ---to smuggle drugs and illegals into USA. Bud swore up and down it was our very own neighbors. They never worked...but had money for a new home and new vehicles all the time. Wonder just how true his imagination could get him. Maybe a reward for the capture? Call 1-888-HOT TIPS!
