Saturday, April 18, 2020 I rec'd this email from Janice

Thought you might be interested in this - I was on our deck late yesterday and saw this.  I thought it was a piece of tree bark and started to reach for it and then I saw the eyes.  I instead took a picture - Al researched it - it’s an Eastern Eyed Click Beetle!!!  The amazing things we see in our backyard - now that we are home more to observe 😂

As I told Janice I have never in my life seen a bug like this.

The harmless Eastern-eyed Click Beetle's large eye spots simultaneously distract and mesmerize. This black and white species of Click Beetle has two large black 'eye spots' on its pronotum. Each eyespot is surrounded by a thick, white ring, making the pair very conspicuous.

  1. Wow, that lizard! Did he accidentally come to rest in a pool of blue paint?
And the wee beetle is indeed fascinating. I'd heard of false eyelashes, but false eyes are something else altogether!
Thanks for a great Nature Friday post.
    Toodle pip!

  7. We have a lot of small lizards where we live. You can't walk down the sidewalk in our neighborhood without having them run every which way! I love them! That is a handsome lizard and the beetle is very interesting!

  8. I think it is a Western Fence lizard, also known as a Blue Belly. It is usually found in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Northern Mexico, and the surrounding area. The Eastern Fence is usually found around the East Coast.

  9. That lizard sure has a pretty belly. Too bad all that color hides underneath him. Those beetles sure look cool.

  11. We have little lizards similar to that, but not the blue belly. I find them most cute and we don't mess with them either. They bring good luck if you ask me.

Thank you for joining the Feline Friday Blog Hop.

  15. We love lizards...well, SHE does. But for some reason they don't come in our gardens...

  16. We love to chase the lizards in our rocks, but they sure are fast. As for that bug, it is pretty ugly. Mom would have screamed if she picked it up thinking it was a piece of bark.

  21. I agree that beetle is freaky looking, but I think most bugs are. That poor lizard wouldn't stand a chance around here with my two lizard hunters.
