Wordless Wednesday

Thanks to our

When I saw these at the grocery store, I was wordless.

   Thankfully Wikipedia had words

Pineberry is a white strawberry cultivar with red seeds and a pineapple-like flavor.[1][2]

Description

Pineberry is a hybrid. cross from Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana.[1] A pineberry is smaller than a common strawberry, measuring between 15 to 23 mm (0.6 to 0.9 in). When ripe, it is almost completely white, but with red achenes (the seeds). The plant is disease-resistant, and highly priced, although not profitable due to small-scale farming, small berry size and low yield.[2][3] Pineberries are harvested in the spring and summer. First identified in South America around 2002, pineberries are cultivated in Belgium and exported from the Netherlands.[2][3]

  1. There is a patch of a white strawberry cultivar in the community garden in Torridon. Until Gail was told otherwise she thought they were just unripened 'normal' strawberries. They are delicious.

  2. Did you try them? Funny how we perceive so many foods with what we see ... as they do not "look" appealing, being so used to bright red berries!

  3. The butterfly is beautiful. I wonder how many people buy those pineberries as they look like unripe strawberries..

  7. Beautiful butterfly! I don't eat strawberries anymore and while the pineberries are lovely muted colors, I would give them a pass. Very interesting about them. I did not know they existed. Always learning something here :)
