When I first moved to London I lived with a friend who had one of those gas-fuelled imitation coal fires. It was so realistic that one time when my parents came to visit I had to stop my Dad emptying his pipe into the flames! Cheers, Gail.
I remember growing up that we had an open coal fire that was lit by gas. My mother used to get the chimney sweep every year to sweep it. Some neighbours used to say it was a waste of money, and a few times we stood in the street and watched the flames roar out of the top of their chimneys.
Cleaning the chimney only reminds me of when we had a wood burning insert. And ended up with two chimney fires over a few years. I will say today I'm glad to be fireplace free.
No matter "what" kind of fireplace one might have, there is nothing quite like having one when winter rolls in ~ whether for warmth, or beauty or mood ...
I had no idea gas logs needed a chimney keeper but reading your post and the comments I can see why. the fire place is beautiful. so is that sunrise or sunset at the beginning. nothing like the sun doing its thing on a coastal community
I never thought about maintenance for gas logs but yes for sure. We have never had any kind of fireplace other than wood burning. I miss a fireplace but we have a fire table on the lanai and that works. It's still cozy and comforting... not the same as a fieplace though :) Love your fireplace and you have some very pretty and shiny hardwoods!
We have electrical logs at our house that turn on with a remote. So sad. There's nothing like the fumes of a burning wood fire, but my pawrents have asthma so we are sadly denied the real thing. Love, Dori
We love our gas fireplace, and it came in handy yesterday when our power went out yesterday afternoon. It didn't matter that our furnace couldn't work. We put our fireplace on low and let it run until our power came on. The way our house is designed the warm air easily funnels to the upstairs. The room with the fireplace was about 80 degrees and the stones above the fireplace are still warm almost 10 hours after we turned it off.
We have a wood burning fireplace and have it inspected every year.....better safe than sorry! We've used the same chimney cleaners for all 27 years we've lived here and now the son is in training to take over for the business owner - it's tough work!!

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo. We are not fans of fires, so we have a gas fireplace. Mom won't even light a candle in the house.

There is nothing like watching the flames dance to put you in a content zone. Your new blog header is beautiful, Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteMom replaced our regular wood burning one with an electric one. It keeps us cozy without the work.

ReplyDeleteSo pretty and warm and cozy looking. And I like the different rug with it, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's a delight to sit in front of a warm fire in the evening.
